This CD is the 1985 European issued album which was pushed out by Sire Records to coincide with the phenomenal success of "Like A Virgin" over the pond. Gone is the original monochrome cover, and replaced with a colourful classic Madonna '80s pic - dangling crucifix, smouldering looks, DIY clothes and messy hairdo.
True to her disco/nightclub roots, every song would be right at home on the dancefloor. There are no proverbial album ballads included and most tracks are over six minutes long (this was lengthy for a pop album). Lyrically the songs are simple requests to escape or for a mystery man to do what he's told.
Although she collaborated with others, Madonna did write five of the tracks by herself (and is credited as playing the cowbell on the sleeve), but of course the biggest hit was "Holiday" which had thankfully been turned down by another artist. Four other singles feature of this short album, two of which were massive hits around the globe - not bad for a debut album.
This album may be an acquired taste for some, and there may be critics who think it sounds dated. However, if you want optimistic, funky pop music to escape into then this album is right up your alley. Even more interestingly, if you've only discovered Madonna's last few albums then give this a listen, she sounds very different but just as great.
