This is an excellent film. Great plot and great acting in this star studded line up.

You will be wondering if there were any clues and if you could have predicted the ending earlier but even after watching this 3 times i couldn't do this.

A must watch.

Wrong Time. Wrong Place. Wrong Number.

A case of mistaken identity lands Slevin (Josh Hartnett) into the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city's most rival crime bosses: The Rabbi (Ben Kingsley) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). Slevin is under constant surveillance by relentless Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) as well as the infamous assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis) and finds himself having to hatch his own ingenious plot to get them before they get him!

A great Cast good storyline and a pleasure to watch..This review is short and sweet just like Slevin..

I like Ben Kingsley as he has so many different characters..Willis is a nasty hitman but has a likeable side not like in the Day of the Jackal but a bit like Butch in Pulp Fiction..This film is a must to any movie collectors collection.

  Lucky # Slevin
Review created: 01/10/07

Even if the dialogue is too glib for the dark and ruthless heroes, a great cast and edgy story keep this thriller moving to the very end.

With a dream cast director Paul McGuigan and writer Jason Smilovic team up to create the latest and best reincarnation of “The Usual Suspects” with sparkling dialogue and a thriller plot that twists until the fat lady sings. Starring Josh Hartnett as Slevin, a feckless young man caught in a gang war with his pants down and Bruce Willis as Goodkat, the iron assassin who almost never fails, “Slevin” capitalizes on the father-child buddy movie with skill and elegance and features the best dialogue since “Pulp Fiction.” It is great to see first rate banter once again a part of blood-thirsty vengeance--together they make such beautiful music. It has elements of the Newman’s “Road to Perdition” with the first rate dialogue and excellent plot treatment of “The Sting.

Just as Kevin Spacey's character in “Suspects” was so hopeless he was great, so is Josh Hartnett as the innocent Slevin caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Collared by two outstanding thug caricatures in a friend’s apartment during a chance visit, he is mistaken for a poor stiff who owes inappropriate debts to inappropriate people. What ensues is some of the most entertaining flashback story-telling since “Suspects” with the best rough and tumble dialog since “Pulp Fiction.” None of the dialogue is ad-libbed--it is all spoken exactly as penned by Smilovic. According to director McGuigan “The words were so particular to this film that if the voice were to change, it would change the film dramatically...” Kudos for him—at least for this film it works.

Lucy Liu plays Lindsey, the over-involving girl next door who comes to borrow a cup of sugar from Slevin’s friend and almost shares his fate at the hands of Mr. Goodkat (Bruce Willis). If the film has a failing it is that these youngsters are too good to be true. But compared to the character of Lindsey, the Mt. St.Helens of ever-erupting freshness, it is easy for the old fogies in the film to look bad. Or at least to look old. Liu continues on her run of box office successes after her role as Cottonmouth in Tarantino’s smash hits “Kill Bill” Volumes 1 and 2 and as Alex, one of the deadly trio in “Charlie’s Angels.”

Which brings us to Messrs. Freeman and Kingsley, two men whose skills and reputations have passed the professional into the legendary. If you have time before you see this film, see Sir Ben in “Sexy Beast,” possibly the best depiction of a real gangster in the last twenty years. Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci in “Goodfellas” are the only ones who come close. His recent box-office buster as Fagan in “Oliver Twist” had more lines than his part as Schlomo “The Rabbi” in this film, but was nowhere near as good. Smilovic wrote the part of The Rabbi specifically for Kingsley and Sir Ben is able to take that brutally realistic gangster persona from “Sexy Beast” and bring those memories into the exact time-adjusted part for this film. He is the same character, only aged to perfection--cranky in his old age, but still mean as a snake as ruthless as they come.

Morgan Freeman has taken bits and pieces from his “Million Dollar Baby” character of Eddie “Scrap-Iron” Dupris, the washed-up palooka who still packs a punch and con Red Redding in “The Shawshank Redemption,” and grafted them together into this visage of “The Boss”, an aging black man who sacrificed everything to rise

  Well worth watching.

The beginning and ending of this movie are excellent with a short hiatus in the middle almost as if the director and crew were changed.
The reason is the status of the star but this should not have produced a fault in what is a relatively seamless presentation.
Acting is excellent though the ease of killing professional is somewhat exaggerated.
Bringing in the love interest was a good thought though could have been better managed. Altogether a good film to watch and enjoy.

  5 Stars - Best film in 2006
Review created: 08/10/06

There is no other way to say this, Lucky Number Slevin is a awesome film, it really is full of twists and turns which I don't think anyone would see coming.

The acting is brilliant and although it has a semi star cast (including Lucy Lui, Bruce Willis and Morgan Freman) the non stars do more then just act.

I really cannot put a bad word in for this film I love it, but what I will say is be carefull of copies, I bought it on ebay a while back and it was a fake. Things to look out for are:

Reflective packaging
Not shrink wraped
the disk art has white circles around
Reigeion 9 dvd's
the disk smells burnt
semi professional boxes/menus which are just shots taken from the film

and the dead give away when playing sometimes a banner comes accross the lower half of the screen and gives a message about the dvd being for award ceromonies and not sale or rental

  Lucky Number Slevin

2006 Sundance Film Festival From the opening scene in Lucky Number Slevin, you will be straining to keep up. People are getting killed left and right, and it's never clear until the end of the movie how they are all connected. But you know it fits somehow and Scottish director Paul McGuigan (Wicker Park) manages to keep you guessing while firmly grabbing your attention and holding it with hardly a second to take a breath.

In the film noir tradition, but with the intense and graphic violence of the Lock Stock and Layer Cake genre, Slevin is really a caper movie, and frankly reminded me more of The Sting than anything else. It dances nimbly from grisly stomach-churning action to clever and light-hearted banter. This could only be accomplished by a truly incredible cast, led by Josh Hartnett in an outstanding performance, great work by Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis doing his thing, and supported by the always excellent Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley. There's even a little time for Stanley Tucci.

Liu plays Lindsay, the next-door-neighbour/natural sleuth/coroner/love interest who discovers Slevin in her neighbour Nick's apartment. They mystery that immediately engages her is what happened to Nick, who never shows up. However, plenty of people do show up, mistaking Slevin for Nick, and before long he is neck deep in murder contracts, called debts and warring gang factions. Hartnett plays the role to perfection. I've never seen him this good. He is both convincing and empathetic as a glib, fearless victim of mistaken identity, yet filled with confidence that he can make his plan work.

This is a terrific film, assuming you can stomach the bloody violence. The pieces fit neatly together (well, I have one bone to pick with the scriptwriter, but it would be revealing too much to share it). I highly recommend Lucky Number Slevin

This I seemed to find confusing at the beginning, I had to really concentrate to pick it up. My husband didn't seem to have a problem though, so maybe that was just me. The filming was good, Actors fitted their parts really well, a sudden twist to the story that was excellent, never expected it at all, not going to say what though! Would definately watch this film again. I choose it because it was a good price and I had read reviews about it that seemed promising, they wre right.

Impressively cast, well acted, funny and cleverly written dark comedy that is definitely worth a look. Keeping company with legends such as Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, Bruce Willis and Josh Hartnett takes the lead in the title role and plays it well. Freeman and Kingsley are as ever faultless and brilliant. Willis is fantastic in this kind of role. The dark, understated, non-action-blockbuster, big cast thrillers suit him well. FANTASTIC Put it on your list.

  A Surprising Treat!
Review created: 16/08/06

I would have given this film 4.5 if I could but it's not quite worth a 5. It is a real treat though and well worth checking out. Without giving too much away, the whole feel of the film shifts massively midway through. As a result, you have no clue where it will end up or the fate of any of the characters, a feeling sadly missing in most films today.

Watch and enjoy!

  Cracking thriller with five-star cast
Review created: 08/08/06
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Yes, this is a really enjoyable thriller where for once, all the bits add up and the big fish stars give exemplary performances. I really enjoyed it, wouldn't have missed it, but my only quibble was with the racial and sexual politics. And in the violent inverted logic of the film, these are the only half-way morally "clean" characters the viewer encounters. Lucy Lui is charming, but she's playing a retro female role where she's both passive and it's all about her sexuality, besides which she's the only female in the film's world the whole way through. The dodgy race and gender stuff left to one side, which on reflection is never too safe a thing to do, it was great fun.

A very good film, well a very strong cast boasting legendary names such as Bruce Willis, Ben Kingsley and Morgan Freeman, along with both Lucy Lui and Josh Hartnett. The film had a good premise, and was well acted with what I found a great script, being both thoughtfully written and having a good end product.
A very good film, I recommend it.

  EXCELLENT!!!

1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A total 'I didn't see that one coming' fest! You do get really caught up in the plot of this one, and though a few clues flag up here or there, ultimately, you just don't see the end game coming until the last scene where it all falls into place and you can't help kicking yourself for not seeing it coming all along!

Basically, a poor no-hoper (Hartnett) gets caught up in a case of mistaken identity, while staying with a friend who's suprisingly nowhere to be found. Amateur slooth/kooky next-door neighbour (Liu) offers a refreshing icing to this well-layered cake, ultimately ending up embroiled in the mystery herself.

You can't help feeling foor the poor schmuck who made the mistake if coming to visit his mate at the wrong time as this hair-brained story unfolds...or can you...?
