John Simm stars as Sam Tyler, a driven and ambitious young detective, determined to keep the streets of 21st Century Manchester safe. But after a near fatal car accident, he wakes up, dazed and confused, in 1973. Has he gone back in time? Is he in a coma? Or has he simply gone insane?

What follows is Sam's 21st century account of 1970s life, where he feels like a fish out of water. He must come to terms with an unfamiliar environment and an archaic CID unit. There, using his modern know-how, he becomes integral to the unit. But he must adapt to their old-fashioned technologies and etiquettes.

Sam works on some of the hardest cases he's ever been involved with. It's a world where witnesses are regularly intimidated, it takes two weeks to process forensics, and his colleagues will nail their suspect whether they have the evidence or not...

Best thing from the BBC in years, nothing else like it on the box, watch it and I guarantee you will be desperate to see the second (and final) series, which concluded in April 2007 on the TV and is also now available on DVD. Great view of 1970's life viewed from today's perspective by the accidentally time travelling cop (or is he?). Will he get home or just try to solve the next case the inept Manchester CID can't manage? Great stuff.

great buy from ebay. very funny in places, subtle in others. will be a classic series in the future, a must see for anyone who liked the sweeney/minder or any 70s cop show. Not your usual police drama. btw though, if you want the second series, its only £12/new inc post from most online suppliers so dont pay over that inc postage from ebay sellers

  Life on Mars series 1
Review created: 12/06/08

I missed most of the series when it first came out, just catching snippets here and there, but after watching Ashes to Ashes (the spin-off) I knew I needed to catch up and badly. Once I'd purchased this, I watched the whole thing over the course of a day. An extremely well thought out and original plot. Sam gets hit by a car in the 21st century and ends up in a coma, but his mind goes back to 1973 - everything seems real and solid but Sam is aware that he needs to get home somehow, he's just not sure how, each episode has a well crafted storyling and moves Sam closer to his ultimate goal. Definitely recommended. I'm going to get series 2 when I have some spare cash.

Oh But It's Weird & Wonderful
Review created: 07/06/08
by:

Okay, okay, my title's from Elton John not David Bowie but it still fits. Life on Mars looks as if it's going to be a police procedural but strange things happen along the way and the series offers some real metaphysical meat to chew on. Sam Tyler is tracking a serial killer (and aren't all the killers on telly serial killers these day?) when he learns his girlfriend, a fellow officer has been kidnapped; sending him rushing off straight into an accident. When he awakes he's no longer in the 21st century but has somehow been transported back to the world of his 1970's childhood. Is he dead? How did he get here? How can he save his girlfriend? All of theses questions are explored as Sam gets down to his new job. Which is the same as his old job but now he's on a 1970's force with all of the good and bad that entails. His new guv is Gene Hunt, a copper who lives by his gut but doesn't always play by the rules. As he and Sam clash over procedure and how best to police the city, clues are dropped to help Sam get home to his correct time.

This was a wonderfully imaginative series which has been bought by ABC in he US. I don't know if it will work as well due to the structural differences between American and British television. First of all, having a man in a coma for two years, while not ideal for the person, is realistic. An American series usually needs to run for at least four seasons for the producers to earn back their investment. An infinite coma would mean the person emerging from it would need massive amounts of therapies and might still be left with deficeits. Sorry, I am digressing. I would just like to recommend that fans of the series get the DVD's. If new to the series, watch the DVD's before the American series begins.

This series is a must have for watching over and over again. Set in the 1970's we follow Sam Tyler's journey through his coma induced politically incorrect policing. Character Gene Hunt provides so many gut busting laughs I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud.

Highly entertaining. Series 2 already on order!

I brought this 4 disc DVD set as I only got into Life on Mars at the end of the 2nd series, and loved what I saw. I also enjoyed the recent Ashes to Ashes series, so knew I'd get value for money out of this item. the team behind this are also the makers of Spooks & Hustle - both programmes that appear on my "must view" list when they are on TV.

Since it arrived 3 days ago, I have watched at least 2 episodes a day, plus the great bonus features on each of the four DVDs which gives you a lot of in-sight into the production team and the characters.

If you are unfamiliar with the programme, I couldn't do it justice in this short space. but what I would say is DO look into it as it is a very original story idea, which will have children of the 60s reminising on their childhood days. John Simms as Sam Tyler is excellent - as we have come to expect from this first rate actor, as is Liz (?) who plays the key WPC role Annie, and Phil Glennister as DCI Gene Hunt is just, well, legendary.

If you get a good price for it, don't hestiate to buy it. However, do shop around as I found out that I could have got it cheaper on another very well know site (hint: rain forest!).

i adore this series, its one of the bbc's best series for a while.

if you love crime shows you will love this series. it takes the classic cop shows of the 70's and styles it in a way that shouldnt be missed. this is basically a 70's cop show but with better acting and better filming, so if you liked it in the 70's you'll love todays remake. the authenticity of this series is unique, and it has a very high production quality. it is equipt with good plot and script writing and i would reccomend viewing this series to anyone.

  Out of this world!
Review created: 10/03/08

It has been a very long time indeed since something this pacey, this original, has graced British television screens. That it's main premise involves heavy reliance on the 70's cop shows of old is ironic indeed. John Simm's character Sam, non too likeable initially, grows on you throughout the series, as you empathise with the hopelessness he feels. But the show is stolen lock, stock and two smoking barrels by Philip Glenister, who as tough talking, hard punching Gene Hunt, brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "reganomics", for he has resurrected the ghost of The Sweeney's Jack Regan, transplanted him to Manchester, and the baddies had better watch out. Superbly acted, wonderfully plotted, with a season finale that is literally edge of the seat stuff, Life on Mars is why TV was invented.
BUY IT!

Great Viewing - Takes me back to my days chasing women!
Review created: 16/02/08

Loved the authenticity of some of the clothes, cars,tv programmes, hair styles.
Seen a few houses with UPVC windows - did they have them in 1973!!! maybe not.
Great to see the 1st car I owned driven by Gene Genie, my beloved Cortina 2.0GXL....excellent viewing if you grew up in that era but good episode stories if you never.
I liked "The Lakes" a debut for actor John Simm who plays DCI Sam Tyler, and "Clocking Off's" Philip Glenister, excellent good old punch up's by the old bill....no wonder we never messed with the police like they do now!!!
Treat yourself and get hold of this classic series - Brilliant.

Life On Mars Series 1 box set
Review created: 03/02/08

Perhaps the most original cop based TV series since the 70's, Life On Mars breathes fresh life into the "time travelling" format.
Using British classics such as "The Sweeney" and "Get Carter" it grips the viewer from start to incredible end. Surreal at times it places a modern day policeman, Sam Tyler, in the shadier world of 70's policework with all it's more basic methodology. Sam's boss Gene Hunt is formidable as the Sheriff of Manchester who is quite prepared to plant evidence or beat up a suspect if it means results.
Sam trys to introduce more enlightened methods to the squad to the amusement of his colleagues. The writers worked hard to present a realistic picture of 70's policing with it's endemic sexism and racism in a thought provoking manner.
Alongside the crime story in each episode Sam trys to understand what is happening to him, is he mad, back in time or is he in a coma? Perhaps if he can work it out then he may be able to get back home..........

If you are looking for a little 1970's nostalgia in a TV progamme then this is the one for you.
Everything from the clothes to the wallpaper has been looked into and taken into account to give this series an authentic look and feel, along with the music taking you back to your childhood, i was hooked on it when it was on the telly and had to buy the dvds(both sets)
You really dont know if he had gone back in time or if he was just dreaming.
It would be nice to see some spin off's to this series as it was so well written and produced that it seems a shame it only had two series made.
The cast also made it enjoyable and believable as they really got into the parts especially as most of them were not around in 1973!
Well done to all involved

  A bit weak?
Review created: 29/01/08

I liked the DVD overall but I find in these dramas, the main character can be a bit weak. I wish he'd grab life "by the forns" a bit more and go for what he wants...like the young policewoman, Annie...it's obvious he wanted to form a relationship but the writer, as usual, squashed that, possibly interesting, storyline. Other weak "mains" are in Trial and Retribution, Lewis, Jonathon Creek, among others...

This program was great on telly, I managed to enjoy it just as much the second time around on DVD. Gene Hunt is a larger than life copper, who dishes out witty one liners. The story is orginal and the characters all fit in around the program. If you missed the original on tv I suggest you buy this, you will not be disappointed!!!

I absolutely loved this series, both 1 & 2 but working evenings meant that I didnt always catch the full episode or sometimes that I missed one completely.
Having the chance to buy it as a box set at such a reasonable price has made me a v. happy person. John Simm and Phil Glenister have to be two of the best actors on t.v and Gene Hunt the most respected, if a little unethical, Law upholder tv land has ever seen. This along with fantastic 70's set/costume and topical themes, great supporting cast, plus the whole coma vs time travel theories make this the most enjoyable tv series ever!!
Ashes to Ashes?.......Bring it on!!!!!

The Free iPhone Guide

To get yourself a free iPhone all you have to do is follow the 3 easy steps:

Step 1 : Sign up for a free iPhone
Sign up at the link below to get your free iPhone. We recommend this free iPhone site because it's been TRIED and TESTED to work.

http://Gifts.real-incentives.com/2992 (copy and paste into browser)

You can choose other prizes like free consoles from this site too! Make sure you use a real email address. Use your real details when you sign up so that the company knows where to send your iPhone! Remember that they have been proven legitimate, so will send you your free iPhone if you do everything legitimately!

Step 2 : Try an advertiser's offer
Basically all you need to do in this step is complete one of the offers, this is where the freebie site make their money, if you complete an offer then the freebie site will recieve commission for it. So if you complete Coral which will only cost you £5 to complete, the freebie site gets £25 from Coral. The two best offers are Lovefilm Free DVD rental (rent two DVD's, keep them for about 2 days, send them back and then cancel the trial) and Coral (bet £5 on a sport). I would reccommend you do Coral as it credits in an hour and is really simple to do, Lovefilm however can become complicated and takes up to 2 weeks to credit! You can also try one of the other offers, most are gambling offers. Don't skip this step! You must complete this step to get your free iPhone!

Step 3 : Refer some friends
This part is a lot easier than it seems, especially now with free iPhone sites getting so popular. There's lots of people online who want a free iPhone too, so start referring them! You only need to get a few signups before you'll be finished. You can ask your friends or your online buddies. I already got a free PS3, Wii, and XBOX Elite without even having to ask my friends for help - there's lots of people online who want a free iPhone like you! One of the easiest ways to get a referral is to do a favour for a friend and ask them to sign up in return. That way, you both can get a free iPhone!

Basic rules
Don't break these rules! This is the only reason that you won't get your free iPhone, so make sure you follow these rules!

- One account per household - don't use a public computer to sign up!
- Use real information - this is a proven legitimate site and they will not give out your information.
- Only complete each offer once! You cannot complete the same offer again, even for different freebies.
- Don't try to cheat the system. This site has been proven legitimate, and they will catch you if you try to cheat. If you do everything legitimately, by following this guide, you will get a free iPhone!

Thats all, just follow my guide and you will have your free iPhone in no time.

Thank you.
