Let's Dance, the album, was released in 1983 and it also effectively brought about the hugely successfully Serious Moonlight world tour from David Bowie, it was THE hottest ticket in town, outselling the reformed Who and even The Rolling Stones of the previous year.
And the album was a very significant reason for that. The title track, as well as the album, was a simultaneous #1 in the UK & US in '83.
Although the 70's is often regarded as Bowie's greatest period he still managed to bring out consistently good albums after but I think Let's Dance is actually a great album, although often overlooked just because of the quality of his 70's output.
The title track on the album is the extended version and it is bliss. I defy anyone to not be impressed. 'Put on your red shoes and dance the blues...' Timeless brilliance.
China Girl is another classic, that virtually everyone must know, as is Modern Love, both #2 UK hits.
There is a reworking of Cat People, an earlier collaboration with Georgio Moroda, where Bowie gives it a harder edge.
The other tracks are good too but these are the stand out ones.
Bowie in '83 swept all before him and this album was crucial to that. Quite an achievment when you consider Thriller was realeased in '83 too but, interestingly, Thriller mania really took hold in '84.
Do you know these little tunes that won't go away once you've heard them? Those really catchy pieces which get your foot tapping and your fingers clicking? This album is full of them. My personal favourites:
Let's Dance is a brilliant, very danceable (funnily enough) piece characterised by a great production, funky lyrics and a Bowie in top form. And that bass line...
China Girl - one of the most recognisable intros ever for a rather sexy song really. Play it again and again.
Modern Love - a fast-paced, really enjoyable piece with great chorus.
