Leica Digilux 2 Digital Camera

Great camera. Reliable study accurate and has so many features that some like videa and sound recording I have yet to get around to using. I have had this camera for a year and it has never let me down. I use Leicas a lot and they are the most reliable cameras I have used. Ok Leica take time to change models but so does Bentley, Rolls Royce and Aston Martin - quality counts!!

After borrowing a Digilux 2 I decided to take the plunge and buy one. For any serious photographer a Leica at some point is a must. It doesn't have the shutter speeds of a Nikon, but the optics are world beaters, and if anything the time delay makes you think more about the shot. This is an excellent camera to cut your teeth on before moving on up to a genuine DSLR ( should you want to) without spending thousands. The camera looks and feels superb, everything just where you need it.
And you will be stopped in the street by people wanting to talk about your camera! trust me. Those that are in the know, know about Leica. As a famous TV writer and producer recently told me! This camera will get you talking.

Its a pity about the box which is a bit tatty, but who needs the box when taking pics

The nice thing about this camera is that it feels like a Leica Camera,and performs very much the Leica way,smooth and not fussy. The best thing is the lens quality which with the digital sensor provides superb quality.

The viewfinder is not the best,similar to the panasonic cameras,but this does not affect studio use as there is abright lcd screen to view,and the viewfider is good enough to compose the image. The camera is superb for portraits.

I purchased my Leica Digilux 2 when it was introduced some 3 years ago because I needed a digital camera for my business and I went for Leica because I'm an avide M user and love the brand. The Digilux 2 has never disappointed.

Yes, the electronic viewfinder is a little difficult, but it is useable. The Digilux 2, a collaborative venture with Panasonic, has the classic Leica design signature written all over it with an unclutted rangefinder style layout and once you get used to the digital features and settings it handles intuitively, very much like a Leica M.

The Vario - Summicron F/2 7 to 22.5mm fixed zoom lens demonstrates superior definition as you would expect and the captured image has that indefinable Leica quality, with just the right amount of colour saturation and contrast. It can be adjusted, but personally I wouldn't touch the factory preset.

I recently purchased a Digilux 3 which is proving to be a real joy, but I would never part with my original Digilux 2.

As I recall, this camera received a number of deserved awards when launched and I wonder if it is destine to become a sought after classic in the future? With continuous developments in digital technology and the pixel race, perhaps not, but one never knows. For my part, image quality and definition from the 2/3 CCD, 5 Mega pixel sensor in the in the Digilux 2 has never presented a problem.

A tip for anyone unaware. For near perfect white balance, purchase an Expodisc white balance filter. Select manual white balance on the Digilux, attach the filter, point toward the light source and set. The results are consistently outstanding.

Although some people find the viewfinder dim, it has never caused me any problems. This is an absolute gem of a camera, and the Leica Vario-Summicron produces magnificent images with a recognisable and special 'glow' that only comes from top quality Leica lenses. Quiet (silent even) and pretty unobtrusive. You will not be disappointed by the in-camera jpegs or the RAW files.
There is a very extended warranty operative for the sensor if it should fail.
