Part mystery. Part thriller. Parts missing!

Something big is lurking in Black Lake .... and it's eating people. Paleontologist Bridget Fonda is sent to investigate. Joining forces with local Sheriff Brendan Gleeson, fish and game ranger Bill Pullman and intrepid crocodile hunter Oliver Platt, they set out to track the beastie down ....
Lake Placid is one of those rare breed of movies that manage to successfully combine comedy with a horror content. The four main characters work extremely well together, playing off each other beautifully, especially Gleeson and Platt. Their scenes together are extremely well executed and they get all the best lines, resulting in most of the laughs coming from this pairing. Yet, despite the comedy, Lake Placid still manages to deliver a creditable horror story, complete with several totally untelegraphed shocks! All I can say is, watch out for the bear!
Yet comedy and shocks are not Lake Placid's only offerings. Director Steve Miner has an excellent eye for detail and each scene is enhanced by such wonderful scenery that it almost takes the breath away. I can only imagine the patience it must have taken in waiting for some of the more spectacular atmospheric shots.
The climax is both exciting and suspenseful, interspersed with those touches of humour, which only serves to enhance the action, never overrun it. Thankfully, the director never loses sight of his creation and allow it to get away from him. Skillfully, he manipulates both the humour and the action so that it works in harmony with the overall tone of the movie.
So, combine the comedy and shocks with the excellent cast and beautiful scenery and you have a little gem of a movie, which excites and amuses in equal measure. If you haven't already seen it, then give yourself a treat and watch it soon! I love this movie! I hope you will too!
