I Am Legend (DVD)

The movie opens in 2009, with Dr. Alice Crippen (Emma Thompson) announcing the discovery of a cure for cancer, unaware that her vaccine also causes rabies. Fast-forward three years, and we find New York City in complete chaos. The healthy few are being evacuated, while the infected are being left behind to morph into ghouls. Although virologist Robert Neville (Smith) has been given a clean bill of health, he gallantly opts to stay in the city to work on an antidote in the lab in the basement of his brownstone.

So, after he tearfully bids adieu to his wife (Salli Richardson) and daughter (Willow Smith), he divides his time between research and blowing away the occasional nocturnal creature he encounters after dark. Not surprisingly, Will Smith comes across as quite the macho charmer in his familiar role as the hero having to save the planet.



I Am Legend is actually at its best early on, while Will is solo and captured starkly against the breathtaking backdrop of the vast, urban wasteland. Unfortunately, the second-rate special effects leave a lot to be desired, so the arrival of the cheesy mansters he has to wrestle with fails to measure up to the tension built in anticipation.

Nonetheless, it's got a great performance by Smith and just enough edge-of-your-seat entertainment to remain recommended, even if the cinematic house of cards collapses during the third act.

first of all i love the film, great film for any will smith lovers! the film is great and has many nail biting scences, the best thing about the special edition one is the alternate ending! i wont spoil it for you but its awesome!

best film of the year!

DVD is in excellent condition. Speedy delivery too. Think it came the day after I won it. Very impressed

it is blu-ray and dont let anyone fool you this makes a massive difference to the movie graphics and sound are just superb will only buy blu-ray now

will smith is great in this movie one of his better films

This was a great film that`s why i bought it. It was a gift for my partner for Father`s day.The DVD had two disk`s, two film`s the second film had a different ending. Have not seen the second film yet so don`t know how it ends.
I would recommend this film, a must see.

This film has positives and negatives. If you've read the novel I think you'll go away disappointed. The original had many great features, not to mention a much starker ending but we all know what that Hollywood requires that the paying public need to leave on a high-note. I was probably must unhappy with the working of the title, in this instance Smith is a legend for his work in trying to cure the 'zombies' with his blood whereas in the original novel Neville was a Legend as the 'infected' (these were vampires by the way) feared his monstrous persona built up throughout the film. In all this is a good bang-for-buck experience but I feel a truer adaptation would have been better appreciated.

I thought the film was well done and with Will Smith in the lead it couldn't have had anyone better. The scene with his dog was very sad and I don't know anyone that has seen it that hasn't been upset by it.
There was nothing that I disliked about the film at all.
If I had one criticism it would be why did they not use the alternate ending?
They could have still had them arrive at the sanctuary. I thought the bit with the mad dude was very touching showing the human instinct that was still in him, as he went to get his missus off Will. Would have probably told people more about the personal battle between him and Will, and why he was so intent on getting to him.

the movie is ok nothing that havent seen before is watchable,a it unclear how the virus got spreed out out but overall is ok movie

Really good film, I enjoy Will Smith, great acting with thoughtful pieces in the film It all starts to make more sense as it goes along, also you get the "Legend" link.

I bought this item because I saw it in another shop along with othe DVD'S but the price was a little bit more expensive than I thought it would have been. Therefore I made a note of the title and price and I had a look on here. Then I saw this item I checked the description to verify that it was actually the DVD I wanted ad I looked at all the details and I was happy to find the price was considerably lower. Therefore I bought this item.
I have seen this film at the cinema so therefore I know I like this film. I think it is a great film that shows off Will Smith's acting abilities. I believe this maybe his greatest acting film. There isn't anything bad about this film.
For the very few that have not seen this or own a copy of it you need to buy it!!!

This movie was so hyped I had high expectations and I am a big fan of Will Smith. The cinematic backdrop of an apocalyptic Manhattan was stunning and the action sequences were well choreographed.

However the story line was transparent and the film could have done with an extra half an hour of explanations and storyline to pad it out. The film was vague at times and skimmed over the events leading up to the eventual demise of human kind. The viral humans looked like something out of a Xbox game and appeared unrealistic. If a sequel was due, I could understand the lack of in depth story line and I would have looked forward to a second movie that would fill in the gaps and provide new twists and turns to a world ravaged by viruses and flesh eating humans. But to conclude, if I have to be honest 28 days later, although on a smaller scale budget was far more interesting and realistic. It was gritty and hard hitting. This movie seemed to have blown its budget on CGI and Wills wages. A disappointing film and easily forgettable.

Absolutely brilliant film. A great performance by Will Smith. However, very different to the fiction book, which is usually the case for a hollywood movie! Nevertheless, still great stuff. The type of movie you can watch over and over.

Excellent take on the Heston make on this classic..... Superb CGI effects and Will Smith plays the lead role with conviction and style that is fitting to his previous roles. Top film.......Recommended !!!!!

I bought I Am Legend, not only because I am a big Will Smith Fan, but because I saw the original Omega Man many moons ago and really enjoyed it. I have to say, however, I was a little disappointed. Will Smith as always was fab but I felt the storyline was a little thin and the ending wasn't particularly satisfying. It was one of those films that you stick with because you are convinced it's going to get better and reach the heights but unfortunately it didn't.

Was expecting some sort of action/adventure, not the zombie fest it turned out to be.... special effects were great, but apart from that not a lot else... not recommended.

Great film and love the alternative ending..... Highly recommend watching this with a friend. Graphics well done and the overall look of New York very realistic..... scary. A must see film.

If you ignore all the plot holes and maybe even the premise the there is ''a cure for cancer'' that is mention at the start but no is ever drawn between that and the ''zombie'' virus, its just a bit hap-hazard and its not sure if it wants to be a horror,an indie or a blockbuster and it fails to entertain on all counts.

Pro's
The opening half of the movie...in which New York is vividly recast as post-apocalyptic dystopia.
Smith's portrayal of a man slowly going insane. Considering this is a big-budget Hollywood movie, this is subtle and quietly moving. Flashbacks to pre-apocalypse confusion are interspersed with care and inform Smith's character and the plot.
The idea that it is Smith who is now the monster. After all, from the perspective of the other residents of the new New York it is Smith who is the outsider. He lurks in his basement like a Frankenstein conducting lethal experiments on innocent subjects he captures.
The sense of dread. This is built slowly and cumulatively. The scene where the dog runs into a dark, seemingly empty building is exquisitely tense.
Sam the Dog. Seems strange to praise a dog for its acting, but for most of the film it's just Smith and Sam and they make a fine double act.

Con's
The second half of the movie. Once the monsters are revealed in all their CGI glory the movie turns into a loud, shouty action flick. The psychological and moral arguments are shunted out of the way and we are left with a series of ever-louder explosions.

I'd consider this an interesting but flawed movie. The first half is great - filled with loads of striking imagery and interesting thoughts about isolation, survival, personal morality, the boundaries of sanity and human arrogance. The second half is more interested in bombs, guns, and monsters. Worth watching for the performances of Smith and Sam.
