  Great album

Good Points
Wonderful music!! Meaningful lyrics, and beautiful music come together to make every song in this a favourite of mine.

Bad Points
The songs are all very similar in style and have a lot of the same chord progressions and such. But if you love what they have, then you'll love every song! So for me, it's a benefit, for someone not so fond of Keane... well you might hate most of it then.

General Comments
Keane is not the new Coldplay. I think Keane is better than Coldplay! I love the music on Hopes & Fears, the piano, the mood of the songs, and the lyrics. They're intelligent and thought-provoking, and then the music is just glorious. Moody at times, uplifting at others, it's always emotional and beautiful.

I saw them in a live concert on the TV a couple of years ago and they were fantastic, so had to get this album and it doesn't disappoint. A great album of piano rock, not a bad track, so the fact that many sound the same isn't really a bad thing !

Probably the best debut album of the millennium so far.

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When record producer James Sanger began working with then-unknown rock band Keane, a radical idea emerged: piano rather than guitar as lead instrument, facilitating greater focus on frontman Tom Chaplin's powerful yet gentle vocals. The departure of guitarist Dominic Scott around that time (he was not replaced) was a catalyst in the evolution of the band's now familiar piano-oriented sound which became the basis for this breathtaking debut album.
Though dubbed by some journalists as "the new Coldplay", Keane's style sounds influenced more by bands popular in the 1980s, such as A-ha and U2.
Hopes And Fears includes 4 UK hit singles, including a couple of the catchiest pop songs ever written; but don't expect the rest of the album to be mere B-side quality. At least 10 of the 12 tracks would be suitable A-side material, from majestic sing-a-long ballads such as the hit "Somewhere Only We Know" through the understated intensity of "We Might As Well Be Strangers" to the ethereal, slightly psychedelic delicacy of "Sunshine". If the melancholic "Can't Stop Now" doesn't quite seem to gel and sounds more like a work in progress than a completed masterpiece, perhaps it's just because masterpieces are what the preceding tracks lead the listener to anticipate.
The lyrics are subtle, poetic, sometimes enigmatic, and express the complexity of real relationships. You won't find any "We love each other - woo-hoo/ you don't love me - boo-hoo" black-and-whiteness here. Instead, you'll find extraordinary uses of ideas and words like:

"Bedshaped and legs of stone
You'll knock on my door and up we'll go
In white light
I don't think so
But what do I know?"

Occasionally, similar imagery is echoed in more than one song, e.g. "When you forget your name" in Bend And Break, and "Trying to stay awake and remember my name" in Everybody's Changing.
Soaring melodies make good use of Tom Chaplin's impressive vocal range, both in technical and stylistic terms though there is perhaps less experimentalism here than in their later work.
The sleeve includes lyrics (albeit with a few errors) and some superb photography by Alex Lake in grainy monochrome.
Once the songs contained therein get inside your head, they might nestle there for all eternity... but that's no bad thing.

An excellent album by a band I know very little about. I only knew a couple of singles off the album, but every track is worth listening to.

Hopes No Fears. (Get in there)

Guitarless rock does work and Keane are living proof. It has inserted a breath of fresh air into British mainstream. The success of Hopes and Fears has not suprised me.

Well written, true music crowds this album which is nothing short of a compliment. I am particuarly fond of the sweetly sounding Bedshaped and the highlight of the album Somewhere Only We Know.

The only reason this doesn't get full marks is because the live cd is charged with extra emotion and is simply superb. If you havn't bought this album by now then buy it!

The Free iPhone Guide

To get yourself a free iPhone all you have to do is follow the 3 easy steps:

Step 1 : Sign up for a free iPhone
Sign up at the link below to get your free iPhone. We recommend this free iPhone site because it's been TRIED and TESTED to work.

http://gifts.kudosnetwork.co.uk/?ref=172 (copy and paste into browser)

You can choose other prizes like free consoles from this site too! Make sure you use a real email address. Use your real details when you sign up so that the company knows where to send your iPhone! Remember that they have been proven legitimate, so will send you your free iPhone if you do everything legitimately!

Step 2 : Try an advertiser's offer
Basically all you need to do in this step is complete one of the offers, this is where the freebie site make their money, if you complete an offer then the freebie site will recieve commission for it. So if you complete Coral which will only cost you £5 to complete, the freebie site gets £25 from Coral. The two best offers are Lovefilm Free DVD rental (rent two DVD's, keep them for about 2 days, send them back and then cancel the trial) and Coral (bet £5 on a sport). I would reccommend you do Coral as it credits in an hour and is really simple to do, Lovefilm however can become complicated and takes up to 2 weeks to credit! You can also try one of the other offers, most are gambling offers. Don't skip this step! You must complete this step to get your free iPhone!

Step 3 : Refer some friends
This part is a lot easier than it seems, especially now with free iPhone sites getting so popular. There's lots of people online who want a free iPhone too, so start referring them! You only need to get a few signups before you'll be finished. You can ask your friends or your online buddies. I already got a free PS3, Wii, and XBOX Elite without even having to ask my friends for help - there's lots of people online who want a free iPhone like you! One of the easiest ways to get a referral is to do a favour for a friend and ask them to sign up in return. That way, you both can get a free iPhone!

Basic rules
Don't break these rules! This is the only reason that you won't get your free iPhone, so make sure you follow these rules!

- One account per household - don't use a public computer to sign up!
- Use real information - this is a proven legitimate site and they will not give out your information.
- Only complete each offer once! You cannot complete the same offer again, even for different freebies.
- Don't try to cheat the system. This site has been proven legitimate, and they will catch you if you try to cheat. If you do everything legitimately, by following this guide, you will get a free iPhone!

Thats all, just follow my guide and you will have your free iPhone in no time.

Thank you.

  One Album wonder!
Review created: 15/01/08

Hopes and Fears is a fantastic album and promises a big future for this band, original catchy and fresh and a voice to die for, I love this album.

Update- Keanes much wanted album release after Hopes and Fears spectacular triumph Under the Iron Sea is a flop, nothing like the brilliant Hopes and Fears and a total dissapointment from such a talented group. I hope they come back better to prove this is not a one album hit wonder group.

  Keane - Hopes and Fears
Review created: 06/06/07
by:

Have been following Keane for sometime (without purchasing) in the music press. Decided to purchase both "Hopes and Fears" and "Under the Iron Sea" from ebay. The album is a mixture of melodic vocals with great instrumentation. Neatley intertwined through both side one and two (though CD has one side only!) with the classic hits that we all try to sing along to and some unreleased singles that are very listenable to!

Very pleased with my purchase and I hope, if you decide to buy a copy, you will be too..

Enjoy!

Lollil

Superb album and one of my favourite bands at the moment, Hopes and Fears is instantly likeable with the entire album packed full of killer tunes. Their unique sound makes a pleasant change to the usual rubbish on the radio. Buy it, you wont be disappointed.
