Not a serious movie, but a lot of fun, with great music

For a plot synopsis, please look elsewhere.
This presentation of Help! is by far the best that is currently available. This movie features some of the most well-known Beatles songs including the title track, You're Going to Lose That Girl, You've got to Hide Your Love Away, and the Night Before, amongst others. The 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack and DTS track are both terrific.
The film in itself is generally regarded as being weak, but it is interesting nevertheless, as it has some irreverent humour and is quite entertaining. One must bear in mind that this was aimed at 1960s teenagers, and not only was the film climate and audience expectations entirely different from today, it was supposed to be lighthearted fun. After all, The Beatles were musicians, and could not have done serious acting anyway.
The DVD picture quality is outstanding, although it would have been a good idea to issue this film on Blu-Ray or as a HD-Download file as well.
In any case, the film looks and sounds great. It is a little pricey, and even after a few months of its release, hardly anyone is ofering this DVD under £14, so DVD buyers used to spending less on DVDs may be put off a little. However, there is a more expensive box set which contains the DVD being reviewed here, and also has some lobby cards, a cool poster, and a book.
Personally I feel the box set is just a pricier option and has nothing substantive to offer. The items included are cool but they're just going to sit in a box for most people. If it can be found for a reasonable price, however, it may be worth considering, but as this film is not that highly regarded by people, most fans may choose not to get the other set.
As for the bonus disc, there is plenty of decent material about the making of the film. The involvement of the remaining Beatles would certainly have made this set more enjoyable, but director Richard Lester offers his time liberally, and for those interested in the actual production of this film, the DVD features specially created material for this edition of the film.
There has been some controversy around this DVD, apparently because one of the special features is called 'A Missing Scene'. This feature is not a missing scene but rather a discussion of a scene that was supposed to be in the film, and I find it quite surprising that this has caused so much controversy because the box of the DVD does not say a scene has actually been added into the feature or included as bonus. Consumers used to DVD marketing, would know that scenes cut from the movie's are described as 'deleted scenes', and even then, sometimes the scene itself is not made available to watch in DVDs. This is certainly the case for many Disney DVDs where sketches or a description of cut scenes is provided. In some very rare instances the scene is re-made (or completed using available material) and inserted into the film (although this is very rare, and usually only happens with animated movies).
I personally do not feel this is false advertising. They did label the feature quite cleverly, though, and they could always claim the missing scene was name of the featurette, and no one was duped. No extra scene is in here folks.
To concude, this DVD comes highly recommended. Fans of the movie would love to hear the music in 5.1 and DTS, and see the picture in pristine quality. Due to the timelessness of The Beatles' music, this film is as vibrant as its four stars and its fantastic tunes. Quite enjoyable!!
