Having escaped the asylum in 'Silence of the Lambs', Dr Lecter goes into hiding in Florence. Back in America, Mason Verger, an old victim of the doctor's, seeks revenge. Disfigured and confined to a life-support system, he plans to draw Lecter out of his hiding place, using the one thing he truly cares for: Clarice Starling...

A sequel that's hard to swallow!

Given the excellence of Silence of the Lambs and an agonising wait of no less than 10 years, the much-hyped Hannibal fails to satisfy the appetite. More Burger and Coke than the Fine Cuisine and Chianti we had dined on during the first course, although it must not be forgotten that Red Dragon was the first to be penned.

Not a terrible film in its own right but not as tasty on the pallet as its predecessor. Gnash, Gnash!

THIS FILM IS AWESOME , A SIMPLY WONDERFUL ADDITION TO THE WHOLE HANNIBAL LECTER SAGA, ITS ABILITY TO SIMPLY CAPITULATE YOU DEEP WITHIN THE FILM ALMOST MAKING IT SEEM LIKE YOUR BONDING WITH LECTER IS SIMPLY AMAZING AND THEREFORE MUCH CREDIT SHOULD GOT TO BOTH RIDLEY SCOTT, BUT ALSO THE SIMPLY AMAZING ACTING TALENTS OF ANTHONY HOPKINS AND JULIANNE MOORE. ITS AN ABSOLOUTE MUST SEE! I RATE IT AT 9/10 SIMPLY BECAUSE NOTHINGGS PERFECT IN MY OPINION AND THEREFORE ANYONE ELSE WOULD PROBABLY SAY 10/10.

NOT THE BEST FILM IN THE TRILOGY BUT MUST BE THE MOST GRUESOME.
ANTHONY HOPKINS IS FABULOUS AS ALWAYS AS HANNIBAL LECTOR, BUT FEEL THEY COULD HAVE HAD SOMEONE BETTER FOR CLARICE STARLING.
ALREADY SEEN THE FILM BEFORE AND WANTED TO KEEP HAVE IT TO WATCH IT AGAIN.

Very good film, tremendous recreation of Verger. What a shame that the ending bears little resemblance to the book

Excellent "follow" up to the original Silence of the Lambs, i was saddened that Jodie Foster did not take on her role as Clarice Starling, although i feel Juilenne Moore filled her boots just great! goes into a bit more about Hannibal himself although we are still left "wondering" at the end, perhaps Hannibal Rising will give us all a better insight into why he committed his crimes, finally making part of us believe a tiny part of him no to be the monster he is?

Brilliant, intelligent and strangely gentle film - has the feel of a love story, odd though that may sound! Superlative acting by Hopkins, enhanced by the wonderful Florence setting, hauntingly beautiful music score, subtly atmospheric lighting and clever camera shots which draw one in, as if actually there. Hadn't realised that the 'man eating' boars scene was real, with trained boars, not computer gimickry. All in all, well worth watching.

Story:
After a decade in abeyance, the courtly cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, returns to the screen, again played by Anthony Hopkins, under the direction of Ridley Scott. When F.B.I. Agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) is blamed for a botched drug bust, her boss Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta) makes a media circus of her humiliation, which catches the attention of Lecter. Now a hardened veteran, she begins receiving letters from the twisted genius, who remains obsessed with her. Yet she's not the only one interested in drawing out the psychopath, now lecturing on the Renaissance in Florence. Italian detective Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini) hopes to impress his young wife by nailing the reward for his capture, and wealthy pedophile Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) is eager to take revenge against the cannibal for leaving him with a hideously deformed face. But they're no match for Hannibal's coyly satanic ubiquity, which bewilders his quickly narcotized foes before he administers a punishment sufficiently grotesque to suit his sense of amusement. The odious Krendler, in particular, learns to use his gray matter for, perhaps, the first time in his life. However, all is prologue to his fated rendezvous with Clarice. A banquet for the splatterati, reveling as it does in gore and dismemberment, the film features brilliant work by a stellar cast, and the kind of meticulous art direction and lushly magnificent photography that one has come to expect of Scott.

Comments:

Anthony Hopkins makes the most of a poor set of events. I bought the DVD knowing nothing about the film or the history. I looked the real story up online, so i was expecting the DVD to be an outstanding tale of a cannibal. I was disappointed to find that the film was nothing like the real story. A few bits of the real story were thrown in at random places, resulting in a confusing, low tempo film. I didn't like this film too much, but this is one out of three films in the trilogy, maybe they are better?

thanks for reading.
