Greatest Hits attempts to sum up the history of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but its focus is firmly in the second half of their career. Early on, in the late 1980s, the Chili Peppers were an LA band who played a unique fusion of punk and funk--four guys, united by a love of partying and playing music. But they had a problem: although they were developing an underground following, nobody was buying their albums. Their first three albums failed to set the charts on fire, though they finally had a bit of a breakthrough with 1989's Mother's Milk. It wasn't enough--their label, EMI, dropped them. EMI's A&R department must be kicking themselves now because the Red Hot Chili Peppers have since gone on to become one of the most popular bands in the world. Their next album. Blood Sugar Sex Magik, was a massive, worldwide hit, containing such huge singles as "Give It Away" and "Under the Bridge". It's follow-up One Hot Minute was frankly a bit poor, but it hardly stalled their upward trajectory. These funky punks had matured and they found a whole new audience on albums such as Californication and By the Way. On them, there's the perfect marriage of playful innuendo, blistering musicianship (Flea is--quite rightly--considered one of the finest bassists in rock) and thoughtful songwriting. Greatest Hits focuses on these later years of the Chili Peppers' career.
Not got all the greats on it but its one to leave in the car so you have a bit of every era of the chilis, an all round good cd for thoughs of you who enjoy chilis in short spells.
I love that kind of music. I listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Offspring, Rammstein, Die Toten Hosen, Metalica so mostly rock, punk rock, alternative and so on. I bought Grestest Hits because it contains the songs I really like. If somebody is a great fan of a band so collects all records while a pal like me prefers keeping the best on one CD to listen to in my car.
But have perhaps had trouble getting into some of there older stuff this album throws a few tracks at you that mite just get you listening to them old albums, of course at the end of the day its just a collection of the better tracks off there albums, althought where the zephyr song is i dont know :p
Anyway, good if you have never purchased one of there albums of if you have had trouble getting into there older funkier stuff, this mite just be the album you have been looking for.
Since 1984 the Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold approximately 60 million copies of their records. The hold the record for most #1 “modern rock” hits with 9 and most weeks spent at the top of the chart with 72! The band has had their troubles but are still creating a fusion of unbelievable sounds mixing together the vibes of funk, rap, pop, psychedelic rock and heavy metal. The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Greatest Hits is merely a small section of the awesome work they do, but it includes some of the best work that they have ever done. The variety of songs included can touch each and every emotion, whether it’s something gentle like “Under the Bridge” or hard hitting and energetic like “Suck My Kiss” the Chili Peppers stand alone with their own genre and melodies. I believe anyone can listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; you don’t have to be a fan or own any other of their records. If you enjoy good music that is not by a “fake” band that only ever have one hit wonders then I would recommend the Red Hot Chili Peppers for their musical brilliance and unbelievable talent. I can't fault anoything on this album and can listen to it over and over again. Undoubtedly, they will go down in history with all of the other musical legends that ever lived!
What else can I say but Red Hot Chili Peppers!!!!! The name of the band explains it all! The Album is a classic. The chili's are amazing and all their greatest hits on one cd, pure heaven. If you haven’t got this cd yet then get it now and take my word for it you won't be disappointed
