Six tracks outa thirteen is a tad under fifty percent, that's how many I liked on this album.Three of those I love and listen to often..Jim Jones, the story of convicts sent to Botany Bay Australia, lovely old song conjuring up pictures of the privations and adventures encountered on the long sailboat crossing;pirates and the like.the cruelty of some of the guards in those times and the escape to the bush to join the likes of Ned Kelly and get revenge," one dark night .. I'll blow the buggers down,"Bob finds some reality in the way he deals with this as if he had been there: so he took me there too, great.
Canadee-i-o... old theme of woman going to sea dressed as a man to seek adventure and satisfy a longing to see the ports of Canada, risky move sailors were a superstitious lot and would have thrown her over the side when she was discovered but the bold captain takes her for his bride and they live out their lives together in the ports of Canada ..aaaaah, i'm a sucker for tales like these maybe that's why Aurther Mcbride is the last of the three loved.......he and his cousin, fine Irish boyos have a run in with the English army's recruiting party and basically kick their arse and leave them, " like wet sacks", another happy ending. I wont bang on about the other tracks, they are good to alright as I have said but if you like folk and Dylan this CD is worth having for these three alone, but you may not like it?
I love Dylan. I play his albums all the time. this is one of his poorer outputs. It is a quiet acoustic album with some rootsy tracks that never take off.
