Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. There's only a 20-minute interview with the director and other shot "making-of" vignettes.
i bought the dvd because i hadnt seen it in years and really wanted to every thing was fine with the dvd exsept some damage of the case caused by the post but over all a good buy
what i really like about the film, was the story behind it russell crowe plays maximus a roman general who is loyal to the emperior of rome, but when the emperiors son murders his father to become emperior and asks maximus to pledge aligence to him maximus knows the emperior was murdered and doesn't pledge aligence, then the new emperior orders maximus and his family to be killed, maximus being the best general rome had ever seen prevented his death but could not prevent his family's, and when he is picked up by slave traders and is forced to become a gladiator he fights to go to rome and battle in the colosseum to meet the emperior and have his vengence.
