Ignore the critics - it's way too easy just to call Girl, Interrupted a 'Cuckoo's Nest with women'. The story and the atmosphere are both completely different.
Girl, Interrupted is based on a true story about one young woman's stay inside a psychiatric hospital. Eighteen-year-old Susanna Kaysen is questionably diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and spends nearly two years on the ward for teenage girls - where she chooses to befriend her fellow inmates, a group of troubled young women.
If you think all movies set in mental institutions are depressing, think again - Girl, Interrupted is often amusing and uplifting, as well as dark and haunting. It has a brilliant cast - Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Whoopi Goldberg, Brittany Murphy, Vanessa Redgrave and Jared Leto, to name but a few, are all outstanding in this compelling drama. Ryder's portrayal of Susanna Kaysen has been called 'weak' by the critics, which is ridiculous. Her performance isn't exactly powerful, but it's one of her best performances to date. Admittedly, though, Jolie outshines Ryder in this movie - she deservedly won an Oscar for her portrayal of fiesty sociopath Lisa Rowe, and anyone who saw 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' and then branded Jolie a 'terrible actress' should see this. Her performance alone is worth seeing this movie for - being an Angelina Jolie fan, you could accuse me of being biased, of course - but she is undeniably brilliant in this movie, bringing the screen to life with huge amounts of energy and emotion. Brittany Murphy is also superb in this movie, despite being slightly overlooked by the two lead characters.
Overall, Girl, Interrupted is a moving, inspirational drama. It's one of my favourite movies of all time, with one of my favourite performances from one of my favourite actresses. I recommend watching the movie with the director's commentary at least once - it's interesting and will provide you with lots of little-known information about the movie.

Angelina Jolie in scuzball-form steals this movie from under Winona Ryder's nose. In so doing she proves that she's a serious actress given the right roles. Overly soft-centred at times but redeemed by Angelina's and Whoopi Goldberg's turns. So far it's holding up well with age but not against the likes of ' Bully' or 'Kidulthood' - teen movies with teeth!

In the 60's, Susanna Kaysen didn't know what she wanted to do with her life, but knew she didn't quite fit into the norm. Because of that, and other problems she tries to kill herself. She goes into a mental hospital diagnosed with having "borderline personality disorder." From her experiences in the hospital, Kaysen wrote the book GIRL, INTERRUPTED and now comes the movie version from James Mangold and Winona Ryder.

There are some major themes going on here, like whether Susanna is really crazy, or conditioned to think something is wrong with her, the nature of what "crazy" is in the 60's.

Ryder brings a lot to the table, not just being a talented actress, but because she makes Susanna's recovery a gradual and detailed journey.

The patients may make fun of the doctors(well-played by Jeffrey Tambor and Vanessa Redgrave) and occasionally challenge the nurses(head nurse Whoopi Goldberg gives her best performance in a long time), but there's no real hatred here, except maybe from Lisa.

Angelina Jolie certainly has a flashy role with Lisa, the resident sociopath, but makes her seem real, until the movie betrays her at the end. When she's pushing people's buttons, she's actually quite sly about it, which is a lot more multi-dimensional than some have made it out to be. The rest of the cast playing patients is also good, but it's Ryder who is the main reason for seeing this fine movie.

This is an excellent film based on a true story of a young woman who attempted suicide at the age of 18. Starring Winona Ryder in the title role, we are taken inside Claymoor psychiatric hospital where she spends more than a year as an inpatient. Susanna (Ryder) insists that she didn't intend to kill herself, yet she is admitted anyway. Whilst inside the hospital she meets other patients; amongst others, Lisa (played by Angelina Jolie), and the main nurse is played by Whoopi Goldberg. Susanna gradually decides to make use of the therapy being offered to her and she keeps a journal documenting her thoughts, feelings and progress.

This film handles the subject of her mental illness very sensitively and it is one which I have watched many times.

This film is in my opinion the best film I hae ever seen. I could watch this film over and over again and find new things that make me love it even more. The two main girls (Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie) Are amazing. Also Brittany Murphy is amazing in this film and should definetly not be over looked.

Great title, and yes there was something going on. However I thought the film failed to give a sense of confinement. Fair performances all round. Apart from some good 60's spectacals on the nurses the sets didn't quite date as well as some other films from the same period. Flying the Cuckoo’s nest at one point, Ryder and Jolie both manage to get away and cover more distance in less time than Jack Bauer in an episode of 24, and then I'll swallow a pill myself if they don't get back again. Couldn’t be compared to Cuckoo’s Nest unless you were happy to compare any woman with a blond wig, red lips, and big Ebay unmentionables, who manages to get her dress blown up by a breath of subway, to Marilyn Monroe.
