  Fleetwood Mac- some golden oldies
Review created: 30/08/08

Bought this one on Ebay and, it is everything you love about 1970S Fleetwood Mac. I have a few other slightly later FM cds, and this stands well amongst them.

There is a good mix of up-tempo and more reflective tunes featuring all the regular voices, and is an excellent introduction to the broad spectrum of music created by the band at this time.

A good buy and lovely to listen while working.

Well, I bought this CD AFTER I had bought Rumours; yet it was THIS album that made Fleetwood Mac appear on the musical radar for many, and which then cemented that success with Rumours.

My odd order of purchases notwithdstanding, I can see very well why this CD (aka The White Album, nothing to do with The Beatles) caused a "heads up" reaction amongst the mid-70s generation. An eclectic mix of styles yet very much in keeping with the Fleetwood genre.

Of course, Christine McVie's and Stevie Nicks' voices are the signature voices on this CD (and others) but the band has a definite 'sound' on this CD - perhaps testament to the 8 years they had already been together; their apprenticeship, so to speak.

With 3 hit singles (Rhiannon, Say You Love Me and Over My Head) from this album you can see that it was not a fluke happening that they had hit upon a winning formula.

Ironically, this No. 1 Album (in the USA) sold 4 million copies, was greatly acclaimed and gave Fleetwood a taste of the good life; Rumours has sold about 25 million copies and made them multi-millionaires; Tusk, the follow up album after Rumours 'only' sold about 4 million copies and was seen as a bit of a disappointment. How fickle the music buying public!

Anyway, if you like Fleetwood Mac's general 1970's style (very different from the Peter Green directed 1960's stuff, produced without the McVie pair) then this will definitely appeal to you.

If you have never really listened to this group then buy it and listen to it about 50 times - and read the words! Then buy Rumours and discover what made them a super-group in the late 70s. For desert, buy Tusk and see what happens when you have too much money and the burning drive to make "the prefect album" has all but disappeared (although still very much worth a listen!). I mean, there's great and then there's OK.

The hit singles are definitely 5 stars; the rest is a worthy 4 stars.
