This is truly a classic - anyone who has memories of this film from a long time ago or has never seen it should watch it now for sure. The soundtrack, the psychadellic undertones, the cheesey lines, the armies of mongo, Brian Blessed - all just a few of the fine reasons to watch.
Keep your eye out for the young star of the crystal maze and dont forget "Gordon's Alive?".
Finally the main character has the best spin off porn name with "Gash Gordon"
Where to begin! The music is fantastic, as soon as you hear the drum start to beat at the start of the song you know that something exciting is going to happen and the tension starts to mount. Queen really captured the essence of the film in the song and everytime you hear the first few bars of it it is instantly recognisable. Sam Jones as Flash is in my opinion perfect casting and along with Melody Anderson as Dale Arden (both of whom were casted unknowns Sam Jones was an ex-marine and Melody Anderson was a model)play their roles perfectly with Topol as Dr Zarkov and Max Von Sydow as Ming the merciless it is a great sci-fi film. This film is star-studded,Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin, the wonderful Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan, along with Peter Duncan, Richard O'Brien and Robbie Coltrane to name but a few who have smaller cameo parts in the film. The film is totally over the top but not in a bad way and is an enjoyable film to watch. It is a film that you can watch time and time again and not get bored with watching it. There must be something in it as it has been around for 25years and is still as popular today as it was 25 years ago. Go Flash Go!!!!!!!!
I already have the video of this film and decided to buy it not only for the excellent price but so that I could show my grand-children The Great Flash Gordon that I used to sit and watch every Saturday morning at the local cinema, in his fight against Ming the Merciless.
This dvd is a must for all Flash Gordon fans! It is an excellent movie from the early eighties (I think!!) I loved this movie when I was a kid. The soundtrack is as over the top as the movie. So it all fits together well. This is the best dvd I have bought in a while.
If you love this kind of comic book heroism then you should buy one now!!!!
A superb film and those who say they do not enjoy it are obviously missing the point. The film is pretty close to the style of the serials of the 1930s and coupled with an all-star cast, a fantastic soundtrack by Queen where can you go wrong. The dvd has been overhauled from the initial release and now includes 5.1 sound (including DTS), audio commentaries, an interview with Mike Hodges and the first episode of the Flash Gordon serial. All in all an excellent release no true sci-fi fan should be without.
