I saw this on television; immediately realised I had to watch it again. It's a highly unusual story and compelling and also disturbing. You might not like it - but you will have to watch it from start to finish to decide. And Daniel Craig is a bonus!
some books make great films, some books make terrible films and this is one of them, mainly because the only thing which links the book and the film is the title, hardly any of the book was made into the film, only the basic idea, very dissapointing as the book is fantastic
An freakish and shocking accident in the countryside has profound consequences for many involved.
After watching Atonement (2007), I decided to finally view this earlier adaptation of another Tim McEwan novel. After a mesmerizing opening sequence, the film loses some momentum towards the middle. However the thriller element help maintain my interest right to the end - remember to watch the complete end credits! This examination of differing forms of human love and obsession is aided by a very good cast. Rhys Ifans is especially good as the oddball who sees an affinity between himself and fellow rescuer Daniel Craig. All in all, I wasn’t disappointed. This DVD has some interesting extras including the mechanics of filming the crucial opener and a comparison of the film and novel - it’s put me in mind to read this book in the near future.
Having previously read the book which was compelling and also disturbing, the film did not disappoint. Samantha Morton and Daniel Craig were so excellent in these roles. Rhys Ifans playing a character so obsessed with Joe that this obsession seemed to eclipse the previous tragedy.
After enjoying Daniel Craig as the new Bond (heck, who wouldn't?)I decided to look at some of his other work. After viewing this film I decided that Rhys Ifans is brilliant - really creepy yet totally fragile and sweet in a way. An excellent casting choice. As for Daniel Craig? Yup, he's hot as an intelectual and totally believable as someone who finds themselves in a freaky situation before they realise just how serious it is. Favourite line from the film? "You're totally Mad", "That's what they said about Jesus" "It's also what they said about a lot of mad people!" (well, something along those lines). Get the film, you'll enjoy it.
This is a exciting and gripping film. It has intense cliffhangers, which will leave you on the edge of your seat. Although not entirely faithful to the novel by Ian McEwan it combines both the intrigue of obsession, and deciet, that the novel so cleverly intertwines. You may find like me, that if you have already read the book you notice missing plot points, and this may be frustrating, but if you forget the novel, and focus on the film, you will see the true brilliance of it! Worth a Watch!!
