An excellent film that did not get mainstream recognition it deserved, I suspect the reason for this is that people were expecting Al Pacino to recreate his ‘Scarface’ role.
Though it is a gangster film, the core subject is friendship and loyalties.
Plot Summary:
FBI agent Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp) infiltrates the mafia, by befriending Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino),
Their tragic friendship is cemented as they rise within the organisation, Joe’s FBI bosses want to pull him out, which will mean the death of Lefty.
i bought this item coz my partner has bn after it 4 ages,i saw it and thought i"d buy it, was a very good price ,and have bought many more dvds of ebay again.
Finally viewed this DVD last night. The actual condition of the DVD was perfect, and the film itself was excellent, as might be expected with stars like Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. They were both outstanding, and Johnny in particular studies the character of a person he is going to play, in great depth, before he plays him. The thing I really like is that this was from real life, and Johnny spent time with the real 'Donnie Brasco' until he had learnt all his mannerisms and characteristcs. Brilliant!
I had avoided Donnie Brasco for years — the idea of a gangster movie from the director of Four Weddings and a Funeral seemed like a losing proposition — and my bewilderment only intensified when it became a cult hit. Well, it finally caught up to me and surprise, it’s terrific. This fact-based film stars Johnny Depp as Joe Pistone, a G-man who under the code name “Donnie Brasco” infiltrated a mafia crew through the auspices of fading hit man Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino). The job was only supposed to take six months but six years later Pistone was still trapped and moving further away from his beleaguered wife (Anne Heche) and children while constantly risking his life. Worse, Lefty treated the alleged gangster like a son, which played havoc with Pistone’s head as well as with his loyalties. Paul Attanasio’s screenplay gets most of the credit for the film’s success. Unlike most of its peers, the script isn’t obsessed with hammering plot points home; it’s more interested in dropping you into the mafia environment and, like the protagonist, letting you sink or swim. Plus, the character of Lefty comes off as hugely tragic (especially as played by the one-time Godfather), an aging failure who’s poignant even in his more brutal moments. You keep waiting for the clichés to arrive but they never do — there’s always something interesting going on in this movie and it’s gripping from the first frame to the last.
Bought this DVD because it has Johnny Depp in it. Not watched it yet. Will look forward to a quiet night in with a glass of wine. Watching Johnny is my best relax.
I decided to by this film because I saw it when it first came out and it was in my opinion a great film. Not only because of the great line up of actors, but because it is also based on a true story. Thoroughly entertaining all the way through - this is how gangster films should be made.
Once you realise that Pacino is not the hero and have turned up the sound it becomes an exciting interesting story with dilemas and rpoblems etc .Better than average
The reason I bought this dvd was that i have just finished reading the book of which was fasinating and wished to see the film. The film was okay, but could ahve been a little more indepth.
Great film, also a great book worth reading too. Amazingly based on true story, though there is a fair amount of poetic licence in the film adaption, it is still a good representation, especially as the real Joe Pistone/Donnie Brasco acted as a consultant on the movie.
Def worth checking out, especially if your a fan of Mafia films
The film was brand new and an original. I decided to buy it because I love Al Pacino films. Pacino played a 'cheap skate' gangster called Lefty. Johnnie Depp played an undercover cop who not only got into his confidence but became his friend. It was an exciting yet emotional film and was also a true story. Al Pacino stood by Johnnie Depp's character right through the film speaking up for him at all times even when he became friendly and trusted by the bigger gangsters. I totally recommend this film. There was nothing at all I disliked about it except I felt sad when Johnnie Depp's character turned states evidence and Lefty went to be executed by the mob for introducing and vouching for him right through the film.
Johnny Depp and Al Pacino. That about says it all. And this film is as good as you would expect it to be when you read that those two are the leads in it. Both put in high calibre performances and play off each other really well. This is first class acting. Believable and charasmatic characters and dialogue.
Depps mole and his journey up the mafia ladder via Pacino is a slow and endearing process based on a subtle mixture of goodwill from his benefactors and obtaining their hard won respect. Eventually Depp is presented with a dilemma; to fulfill his mission but as a result potentially betray the person he has grudgingly come to know and like.
This is a cool story and arguably one of Pacino's best performances to date. Donnie Brasco is an interesting and well put together movie that is definately well worth a watch.
I am not usually a fan of gangster movies as such, but as a collector of Johnny Depp films I was pleased to be able to add this one to my collection. It is a very moody and gritty film, and you can feel the tension in the superb acting of its stars, particularly Johnny, who is in a very precarious position working undercover for the CIA. It is all the more poignant in that it is a depiction of actual events, so you really feel for the central characters.
I bought a used copy, and unfortunately it sticks and jumps in a couple of places, but I still enjoyed it immensely, and would recommend it very highly as a piece of film-making.
WITH JOHNNY DEPP AND AL PACINO YOU'LL NEVER HAVE A BAD FILM. DEPP KEEPS SUPRISING ME EVERY TIME AT HIS REMARKABLE ACTING ABILITY AND AS FOR PACINO, HE'S AS BRILLIANT AS EVER. BASED ON A TRUE STORY THIS FILM HAS YOU AT TIMES LAUGHING AND IT COULD EVEN HAVE YOU IN TEARS. YOUR HEART WILL GO OUT TO PACINOS CHARACTER. THIS FILM DEFINITELY HAS MY APPROVAL. 10/10
As a look into the workings of the mob and as a film about an undercover detective trying to infiltrate and ultimately survive within this is a great film. Watching Johnny Depp's portrayal of Donnie "The Jewel Man" Brasco is fascinating, he manages to show the pressures and how they affect him both personally and in his home life with the attitudes of the mob seeping into his attitudes towards others. However, the main fault lies in the actors. Al Pacino and Johnny Deep are both top A-list actors yet Pacino for the most part appears to just be going through the motions. There are some excellent scenes with the two and Pacino does bring class acting to some areas, but he appears tiresome in others. It isn't a bad performance, I just expected more from him. Depp is excellent however, bringing excitement to every scene he is in. There may be one completely unnessecary shot involving a leg and a hack-saw but other than that the story moves along well, at good pace and, for the most part, is well acted. Good film, lacking slightly with Pacino.
