As the Doctor would say: "Fantastic!"

For someone like me the return of Doctor Who in 2005 was scary: I’d grown up with it. From Tom Baker in my dimmest memory as a youngster to McCoy as the series waned. Following the adventures of the TARDIS crew is a fondly remembered part of my childhood. I followed the Doctor in books and CDs in his years of exile between 1989 and 2005. Looking back now, I remember worrying that the new series could have been terrible.

There was no need to worry: the new series is fantastic. Sassy, lavish, funny, fast and still miraculously recognisable as the Doctor Who we remember. Eccleston is brilliant as the Time Lord and Billie delightful and convincing as his companion. Other star turns through these 13 episodes from John Barrowman, Richard Wilson, Zoe Wanamaker, Camille Coduri and Penelope Wilton (to name only a few) all contribute to the classiness of this return to form.

As you enjoy these 13 episodes, you will be swept away by the inventiveness, humour and superb quality of the production. The special effects are actually good. Let’s face it, the kids of today wouldn’t flock to the dodgy sets and terrible monsters that pleased me when I was young. They rightly expect more and they get it by the bucket-load.

There’s lot here for grown ups too. The Bad Wolf leitmotif is dangled in front of us from the very beginning and it intrigues and niggles until it is resolved in the last episode. Issues of sexuality and love aren’t shunned and we are left wondering exactly what is going on between the Doctor and Rose.

And you get daleks! Yes, daleks: scarier, more malevolent and more dangerous than ever before. They can fly and there are thousands of them! I tell you, it’s worth it for the daleks alone. EXTERMINATE!

What do you get on this boxed set aside from the fantastic 13 episodes and loads of daleks? In terms of extras, it’s a bit disappointing. There are some engaging ‘making of...’ vignettes which will probably only appeal to the seriously spoddy, but they do pass the time. The commentaries too are a bit boring and self-serving. Billie, Russell T and John Barrowman are interesting enough when they appear but Christopher Eccleston is sadly missing. The set also includes the Doctor Who Confidential series originally seen on BBC 3. That said, these aren’t the full episodes but ‘cut down’ versions.

A lot of stick in the mud Whovians don’t approve of the new series. I’m glad. This is Doctor Who and it’s better than ever before. Grab this box set so you can enjoy it again and again until the Doctor returns again in the spring.

For someone like me the return of Doctor Who in 2005 i was excited: I’d grown up with it in my home and in my memry of watching it i'd remembered the Doctor's enemy's like the daleks! Yes, daleks: scarier, more malevolent and more dangerous than ever. I tell you, it’s worth it for the daleks and Following the adventures of the TARDIS.

  Regeneration!
Review created: 15/02/08

Good start to the revived Doctor, first couple of episodes a little superficial but it improves as the series progresses, a great re-watchable filler for those evenings when they can't be bothered to schedule anything decent to watch!

  brilliant revamp
Review created: 08/01/08(updated 08/01/08)

I think anyone reading this will already be aware of the "new" series of Doctor who so I won't launch into a long review! What I will say is that the enormous success of the new series is thoroughly justified. I think the choice of, firstly, Christopher Eccleston and then David Tennant to portray "The Doctor" is inspired. Both actors have treated the role and the series with total respect and this comes across in their portrayals. The series is now rightly seen across the world as a top-class sci-fi/fantasy series and has won the prestigious Hugo Award (a recognised top sci-fi award voted on by top sci-fi writers and creators) two years in succession (2006 and 2007) in the film category "short form" meaning television story/episode. The first of these awards was for the 2-part story "the empty child/the doctor dances" from the Eccleston series of 2005 which is the set I purchased from ebay (for completeness-the 2nd award went to "girl in the fireplace" from Tennant's first full series 0f 2006). This set comes in the large tardis shaped box which is now a collectors item as the subsequent releases are in a normal fold-out dvd-set and this is the reason i bought it on ebay. The price was a steal (a third of the retail price) and the condition is mint. If not for ebay i would not have been able to get this set at a fraction of the price! So am well pleased! 'nuff said!!

All my family are really into Doctor Who. My daughter especially likes Billy Piper. I bought this box set because I liked the fact that the whole series could be kept together in one box.
I would highly recommend this product to everyone who likes Doctor Who.

  Dr who DVDS
Review created: 06/06/07

I bought this for my son Ryan who loves Dr Who. I liked the fact it is in a boxset so they can be stored together and Ryan liked it as it is the shape of a Tardis! My boyfriend said it was expensive but as there is alot of DVDS it was cheap - whats the point in paying full price when secondhand is in some cases as good as new. I did'nt dislike anything about it -postage was reasonable and it was in good condition. Also they hold there money as they are collectors items and in years to come when he has watched them you could re-sell on ebay!

Doctor Who - The New Series - Series 1 (DVD)
Review created: 13/05/07

Ever since the new series of doctor Who came out with Christopher Eccleston my son and I have been huge fans of the series, myself remembering cowering behind the couch at his age while Tom Baker waged war with a man in a rubber suit. Now the special effects and computer imagery are out of this world with this DVD set. I couldn't believe seeing this bargain on e-bay as I have not seen this set anywhere else. Not only do you get the spectacular 13 episode of the first series you also receive the confidential series which talks about the stars of the show, how they made the show and peoples comments. The set is packed in a foldable Tardis disc set which does not look out of place on any person's shelf and makes this set unique. With over 16 hours of entertainment and the look of the product this is why My son and I have rated this product Excellent.

DR WHO SERIES 1 BOX SET
Review created: 08/05/07
by:

Predictably enough, the price. To buy the series 1 boxset is at least £50 in the shops and I got it all in (postage included) for 325.

As an old time Dr Who fan, I say the old magic is still there with a new show for a new generation. I know of very few older fans who haven't enjoyed it,and the extras on the set are incredible.

Documentary footage, very funny commentaries and behind the scenes fun. Now it has been available for well over a year, you can get a good price on it with very little difficulty.

Highly recommended

Doctor Who Series 1 (DvD) Exelent, good, brilliant.....
Review created: 08/05/07

I'm an old fan of the original Dr Who, I was there day One, aged seven and loved it. During it's declining years I was sad to see it still running without the thought, care, and money it needed to keep it's standards up. The second time the Daleks where shown on screen in 1964, Fighting William Hartnell in the future on Earth, the BBC spent the same amout of money as would normally have been spent on a feature film of it's day, and for the first time the Beeb did outside shooting around London for a Tv project, old now, but money well spent at the time. After the attempt to revive the Dr in the late Nineties failed, I was horrified when Russel T Davies wanted to bring it back again, I was frightened he, and the other writers wouldn't understand Dr Who... How wrong I was. This is Dr Who re-invented. but they keep the spirit of who the Dr was. This is not just Si-Fi, it is well written drama, with feeling and Humor. Time and money put to good use on the stories and effects. After the first episode explains the Dr and your need to know a bit of Dr Who history is explained, things really take off, showing what time travel could be like, The future, and how the world ends. and how far vanity and corruption could go. The past, and an explanation of Ghosts in Victorian Times, with really great guest actors like Simon Callow. They show you why every one should fear a single Dalek, let alone a whole fleet, re-inventing them just enough to make the difference. There is a demonstration of why you shouldn't mess with time in the episode 'Fathers Day', when a longing to change time nearly destroys thw whole world, It's sounds really corney, but the story is well written, with depth, sadness, and loss, brilliant. If you ever liked Dr Who just a little, you'll love this, If you enjoy the odd interest in si-Fi you will love this, If you have ever thought of what would happen if you could travel time has ever caught your imagination, then... yes you will love this, If you enjoy well written drama, that grips your imagination then.. you you will love this... Look just go out and buy it, I did, it's simply great.

must see season for any fan
Review created: 07/05/07

I decided to buy this title as my son is a huge fan of David Tennant in the new series of Dr Who. i felt that it would be a good for him to watch the episodes from the begining so looked for the first season. Knowing how much he loves the Tardis it was ideal to find the Tardis boxset on ebay and for a very reasonable price. Any fan would be thrilled with the item, and it has a great link into season 2 and how the Doctor regenerates into David Tennant, as well as a behind the scenes extras dvd of Dr Who confidential.

Doctor Who - The New Series - Series 1 (DVD)

BBC WALES have done themselves proud and all the writers and production team, within seconds of watching Christopher Eccleston showed why he became the doctor the part was made for him. The Series just gets better and better, the story lines link each other very cleverly, its an awesome DVD, The AUTONS are back, like me who group up on john pertwee the AUTONS are one of my favourites and this episode at the start is abound of great humour and very detailed graphics. There is so much in this series, the character of the Doctor is developed even further, and i will not spoil it for you, but you find a darker side of him, the writing is brilliant again to detail, the work has shown through on this production, i have to confess i was upset when Christopher Eccleston departed, but the series of the Doctor has continued strongly, you have to buy this, you will watch again and again.

5/5 FANTASTIC DVD!

The series was great and much-written about elsewhere, so I'll just mention the DVD box set itself: good quality recordings, but could we have the full 'making-of' documentaries, rather than the cut-down ones, next time please.
