The daleks were given a sequel and what a sequel!

This is a great story - so great that they had to make a Big Screen movie starring Peter Cushing as the Doctor.

This a great story and includes everything that make Dr Who great. A bit more money from the BBC this time (thanks to its growing popularity) and it shows! A fantastic DVD that involves everything you want from Dr Who - New fans will love this - old/hardcore fans will adore and appreciate/treasure this! I know I will!!

This programme was SO ahead of its time and thankfully has fully established itself once more on our screens; however, considering the crew had none of what we expect/see in tv of today - the story telling, effects etc were great for that time period. A fantastic piece of Dr Who history that needs to be owned by all fans.

The Daleks are coming - watch out!

  Daleks in London!
Review created: 26/01/08

The Dalek Invasion of Earth was so good a story that it was remade some time later as a movie. The plot centres on the Doctor and companions arriving in 22nd Century London following a dalek invasion. The DVD has optional new CGI effects of the Dalek spaceships.
I think this is one of the strongest original Doctor Who stories I've watched, with plenty of action and plot development rather than the middle episode padding that seemed to be a feature of some of the 80's stories.
Filmed both on location in central london and in the studio, the story doesn't look cheap and aside from the lack of visible "war damage" to London, this production has a high quality to it that helps it stand up better than most to the tests of time.
One of the weaker points of the production is the Doctor himself. Perhaps we've been spoiled by the action men of the last few years, but the Doctor certainly doesn't feel like a central figure here and you kind of wonder whether anything would have happened any differently if he's stayed in the Tadis with a mug of cocoa and a good book.
There's plenty of extras on the DVD (Two disk R2 version): Look out for the impressive movement and synchronised dancing of the Daleks on Blue Peter. There's no doubt that their operators certainly put the time in to make their movement as realistic as possible and if it wasn't for their annoying habit of roling backwards and forwards every time they say something, they'd be perfect!
I wouldn't bother with the radio play though, it messes with the Characters of both the Doctor and Susan a little much in my opinion.
I'd recommend this DVD to anyone, both young and old. EX-TER-MIN-ATE!

BB

  Classic 60s Who

It gets increasingly more difficult to watch these old sixties episodes as the media continues its trend for fast-paced stories and scenes that never last more than a few minutes, so be warned; the old series of Doctor Who, because of the technical limitations of the time, is now as cumbersome as a badly directed stage play.

It's worth noting, however, that this adventure from the second series is, in a sense, the start of today's drama, as studio work was intercut with location work for a bigger, better, production, and some of the scenes are, by the standards of what went before, relatively short, so the action is free to jump from scene to scene and character to character.

The end result is a fairly satisfying affair; there's plenty of peril and derring-do, an interesting plot as our four regulars are divided and must travel their own way to the denouement, the Daleks are as mean ruthless as ever, and the ending leads to a fine emotional scene for William Hartnell, the original Doctor, as he realises he has come to a parting of the ways.

There are flaws, of course; the romance between Susan and David seems a little mechanical and formulaic, the Dalek's plan to remove the earth's core and replace it with a device capable of 'driving' the planet around the galaxy seems pretty pointless - and an awful lot of bother - when they have perfectly serviceable space ships to travel around in, and as mentioned above, the slow pace can get a little tedious to the modern audience.

But, if you can remind yourself that the past is another country and they did things differently then, and maybe watch the episodes over the course of a week or so, you should enjoy this adventure; and it makes a nice counterpoint to the new series to have the hero as an elderly, genuine, eccentric, instead of a youth-orientated 'hip' and 'cool', 'right-on' dude...

Fans of Andrew Keir, Bernard Cribbens etc should go for the film remake with Peter Cushing as the Doctor. In the TV show, William Hartnell was accompanied by William Russell, Jacqueline Hill, Carole Ann ford, Peter Fraser, Bernard Kay and Alan Judd.

Big brother bought for little brother's Xmas present. Loved story but they weren't expecting black and white! Not your fault - they just aren't a generation to expect it!

A great Invasion Into Time.... and History!

I had read a review on the internet about The Dalek Invasion of Earth, and thought I'd watch it. However, after buying the wrong Dalek Invasion of earth (The Movie, starring Peter Cushing, to which is also fantastic) I brought the classic version, starring William Hartnell, and loved it. In not a huge fan of the vintage Black and White era of Television, but after watching this, it has totally changed my outlook. It is a real eye-opener to watch something from the early days of Television.
William Hartnell is a ledgend to British acting, and should be known as "Sir William Hartnell" he has got to be the best choice to play the Doctor, and was something, in my opinion, a hard act to follow for Patrick.
Well done the BBC for creating something soo good.

Great series - back in the '70s, we rarely ever saw a whole series of Dr Who - there's always be a trip or outing etc which meant that you'd miss a crucial episode. Buying the set of a series in a DVD means that now after 30 years of wondering how on earth the Doctor got out of London whilst beign persued by Daleks and "Robomen", I now know !!!!
