A fantastic rockumentory. More punch than Spinal Tap. Following the disintegrating relationshiip between two bands. I bought this for a gift as its a film to share.
I love this film! Brian Jones Town Massacre are one of the bes bands and you find loads of differnt songs from the dandys which i never realised they sang!! this is a must see film
I bought this dvd because i like the Dandy Warhols, so having never heard any music by The Brian Jonestown Massacre, but having watched the film and enjoying it very much, i will be acquiring some albums by them very soon. The documantary is one of the best music films ever made, while most music documantarys don't let us see anything that the band would disapprove of, but not this one! we get to see all the good and bad things that can happen over six years when two bands that start off as friends get competitive, sometimes i find music films a bit of a endurance, this one is two hours long, but i could have watched another hour, no problem.
The inside cover from word go is slanted t'wards the favouritism of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, I (but who am I) would have preferred more freedom for the viewer to make up their own mind. The film itself comprises the edited highlights of 7 years worth of the documentary makers voyueristic pursuit of 2 bands the aforementioned B.J.M. and The Dandy Warhols. The DVD cover suggests that the Warhos sold out and lost integrity and are therefore far less cool & hip than the BJM, the movie is less judgemental and will show both sides of this bizarre relationship quite well. I won't spoil anything but bear in mind these thoughts as you witness what appears to be a train wreck of a life unfold. I should point out that a lot of the more unbiased footage was edited out for length purposes. Perhaps a mini-series that's endorsed by all parties will be made one day. Here's hoping. The seemingly petty ignition sources for youthful powderkeg energies are not to be viewed too harshly though, as the emotional and physical fatigue of a season on the road will test anyones resolve. Depending on your perspective it's all an amazing hoot. It's both fly on the wall and seat of the pants. I was left not knowing entirely what to think though I must profess the music throughout was excellent in the extreme, supplied of course by The Dandy Warhols and the BJM.
