Dell Latitude C640 PC Notebook

I had been after this particular Dell model for a few months, as in its range it is a quality piece of kit.

I like the older Dell's as you can charge/use 2 batteries at once, which in a laptop is pretty essential.
The C640 is a lovely looking laptop, all the keys and buttons are well placed. The fan is slightly tilted so air can flow more easily and it doesn't overheat when placed on a material surface. you still have to be quite careful as it does get rather hot, I think this is due to the 32mb ATI graphics card.

It only has USB1.1 but with a few accessories which I have bought it can be as good as any modern laptop. I have a 2 port USB2 pcmcia card with memory-card reader & bluetooth USB dongles, also a USB powered 2.5" 160GB external harddrive brought from ebay for £72.

The laptop has a DVD reader/CD Re-Writer and 8011b/g wireless all built in which is brilliant.

Problems with the Dell C640 laptop :
* the nipple mouse marks the screen too easily
* gets very hot very quickly
* the screen is too bright and the brightness/contrast control are not so good

Good Points :
* fast, stylish and solid
* compact considering all the things it has
* 2 battery charging means double

the battery was causing problems when starting the computer. i phoned paul and he sent a replacement battery and haven't had the same problem since.

I bought one of these off ebay about six months ago. Here are the points I have found to be good and not so good.
Firstly for an older laptop they do come with a decent Intel 1.8Ghz processor which I have found to be quite quick.
Memory varies from 256 MHz DDR upwards, however this is a very cheap upgrade option and more to the point extremely easy!
As with most Dell laptops they are very solidly built and durable.
Operating system is usually either Windows XP Pro or 2000. The laptop will run on Vista as I have had it running on mine without a problem. The only drawback with doing this is that the graphics card is not powerful to run the aerodeck features on Vista. Best bet is to stick with XP as its a much more reliable system and drivers are readily available for any existing hardware such as printers etc.
My only slight complaint is 1, the mouse pad buttons appear a bit clunky and 2, the DVD drive opens to the front. The latter can be a pain if you are using the machine on your lap.
