I bought this album because I've got 'What's The Story (Morning Glory)?' and I can't get enough of that album. I thought that 'Definitely Maybe' would be in the same category.

Unfortunately I can't muster so much enthusiasm for the latter. However, I probably need to listen to it a few more times to make a fair judgement.

Oasis - Definitely Maybe (CD 1994)

I bought this because my original is a bit battered now and is worth every penny you could pay for it.This album is simply just the dog's b#@>~s.Oasis at their raw best, rough unpolished diamonds. The majority of these songs were written when Noel was lonely and dreaming of something much better than what he had been given, four being written when the genius that is Noelly G was sitting with his acoustic guitar at work with a smashed up foot,"columbia, live forever..erm..and i can't remember the other two" lol.The band's engine room-Bonehead and Guigsy-is at it's most powerful,Tony's drumming is perfect for the punky let's-go-get-pissed-and-tell-mortality-where-to-stick-it nature of the songs,Noel's fuzzy block of sound guitars and songs are just genius and Liam's voice is at it's most powerful, just listen to Slide Away, the most powerful love song an indie band have ever produced and Liam's best vocal. If you only buy one Oasis cd,make it this one and treasure it.Only non-positive bit being that there isn't a space for Listen Up(Cigs and Alcohol cd b-side) and i,personally, thought Take Me Away(Supersonic cd,12",7" and mc b-side) should've been on there instead of the double vinyl version only Sad Song.Otherwise perfect, part with your last penny to buy this album.I've got it on cd,double black vinyl,mc,red, yellow and green reissue double vinyls lol.Play it loud, have a p@#s up and Live Forever!!!!

  Oasis Definitely Maybe

Best debut album ever. Saw the Gallagher brothers with City tops on that first took my notice, then 1 night i watched top of the pops. It was full of boy/girl bands miming, no instruments, black bands rapping. Then all of a sudden Oasis were introduded and sang Rock'n'Roll Star and I was blown away. At last a band that played guitars and drums.I was that impressed that I bought Definitely Maybe the following day on the strength of that 1 track. Then I heard so many guitar tracks like Shakermaker, Up in the Sky, Cigarettes and Alcohol, Supersonic, Live Forever, and Digsys Dinner. This album is twice as good as Morning glory, yet doesnt get the recognition. That said, most of the tracks on Definitely Maybe never get radio play, which is a good thing. Thats why im bored of Morning Glory. Overkill of Dont Look Back in Anger anr Wonderwall.

Well you dont need me to tell this was the album that changed music forever, this album was world class at the time and would still be the case if it was released today this is the album that still makes it into the top 10 albums of all time the songs still stand as strong today as they did back in 93/94 it is very rare today to get an album that you love to listen to all the tracks all the way through without skiping a track and not just just wanting to listen to the singles, i dont think we will ever see an album like this made again let alone a band debute album! world class ablum i mean 4 singles realsed and that doesnt inlcude slide away and the all time classic rock and roll star not bad from a group of lads from a council estate!

You ever look for one of your CDs and can't find it because of the following:

a. You've been burgled and can't recall which albums 'walked away'.
b. You moved house and don't know where the hell you've put stuff... or if it even came with you!
c. You had to sell a cherished album because you were deperate for cash.

Well I can say a & b happened in my case and I eventually got around to getting this back... and CHEAP too thanks to eBay!

Some blinding tracks on here... including the great "Cigarettes & Alcohol" - proof that a Manc. accent can make a song stand out - forget putting on a Yank accent - this is top stuff our kid!

Other tracks that shine out on here include 'Columbia' (now there IS guitar playing worthy of note), and the great riff on 'Supersonic' must be mimicked by Noel wannabees everywhere - and why not? A great track!

Worth a bid on eBay to get this cheap - have a go... you won't be disappointed!

  Oasis - Definately Maybe
Review created: 05/07/06

Being a born and bred Mancunian, buying a copy of this classic album was a must! Back in 1994, Oasis were relatively unheard of, until shaking the music world with the release of Definately Maybe.

For me this album holds many special memories, particularly of being at school, but also, it signalled the change in music whereby bands once again held prominence in the music charts.

Some might say (excuse the pun) that this was Oasis' finest hour and i would firmly agree with that.

Definately Maybe captured the essence of the post "Madchester" era perfectly and will remain a classic album that every music fan should own.

  excellent debut album

This album is immense. A real feel good album which is packed full of 90's anthems. Forget the Beatles, Oasis are the best band ever to have graced this earth. The Beatles made some outstanding songs but unfortunately had a lot of awful songs as well. The 90's was the best decade in music terms. Great bands left right and centre with the likes of The Verve,Pulp,Supergrass,Charlatans,Cast,Bluetones etc. Its a shame Blur had to be there to spoil it all.
This is a top notch album with no fillers. You have to be insane not to buy this album - buy it and youll see what i mean. Stand out tracks on this album are Rock N Roll Star, Live Forever, Cigs & Alcohol, Slide Away & Columbia. In my opinion LF is the best song ; it is consistantly ranked in the top ten greatest songs of all time. It is argued that this is the best debut album of all time although i think Stone Roses' 1989 debut was outstanding. People say that SRoses paved the way for the likes of Oasis but Oasis were inspired by the likes of The Beatles so i think they would have still done it without the Roses. I reckon this is the best debut album of all time as Oasis changed peoples lives with this album. People in Britain were in a state of depression and soon found themselves going out to concerts ;drinking and getting stoned.
There is also the argument that Morning Glory tops this album but I strongly disagree. Definitely Maybe stands for too much to be ranked below Morning Glory. After the first album Oasis were never the same really. They calmed down a lot in their second album but showed they can make music at any level with the likes of CS another 90's anthem. Throughout the years, Oasis have calmed down even more but have still shown they can produce top quality music and have topped the charts on several occasions.
Oasis ruled the 90s. In the 90s Oasis and Blur were the main music attractions for the public. After the 90s pop had taken over and now worthless American stars such as Britney Spears are the main targets for the gossip sections of your newspapers. Just now Britain is in a coma. It is totally addicted to these American stars who should be ignored by the whole world. The music isnt the main thing anymore, its the money and the fame. I doubt if Britain will ever come out of it. Probably not, the 90s was unique and probably will never be repeated although id like it to. Oasis are viewed as an old band now but what about the Beatles?! Nobodys forgotten them and I'm sure that in 30-40 years time Oasis will still be talked about and greatly missed. Oasis plan to release one more studio album and then a collection of all their greatest hits which will be filled with anthems from this record. Oasis will surely have their closing concert in their beloved Manchester and Ill certainly be making the trip there to see them go out with a bang. If you find you dont like this album then try Oasis' other albums your bound to find something you like. Put it this way; how many people do you hear say that they do not like the Beatles at all? BUY IT NOW

Forget best debut, best album of all time. Definitely.

The first Oasis album I heard was Morning Glory, excellent in its own right and so I thought I'd have a listen to this. I haven't looked back. This album has something for everyone, I doubt there is not one person in this country who doesn't feel the need to jump around like a loon full of their own self importance when they hear rock n roll star, or one person who doesn't think 'bloody hell!' at the end of the glorious Live Forever. If you don't own this album you are missing out. This is why Oasis are the biggest and best band around at the minute, forget Coldplay and their dreary depressing dirges, stick this on and realise how it could be. Fantastic.

  best debut album ever?

This album is one of the best, & most important, of the last 20 years. From it's crashing start of "rock & roll star" to the hilarious end of "married with children" it never fails to entertain. Highlights of the album for me are pretty clear, ciggarettes & alchol is an anthem that anyone in a seedy boozer on a weekend will love. Supersonic is just down right brilliance, Liam's voice exudes arrogance & it suits this song like no other. Shakermaker's class & has some bizzare lyrics to have a good laugh at. & then you've got live forever, which is a song that will do exactly that, it will be in "best songs ever" polls for the next 50 years. There are many great things about this album, but i love the simplicty, its a straight down the line ass-kicker of a rock n roll album. I've got 100's of albums from many differnet artists but this would make my top 5, & certainly the best debut album i've ever heard. Highly reccomended, if you only own 1 oasis album in your life, this is it. I'd also reccomend after listening to album to see a copy of the 10 year anniversary dvd. Its a good documentary & features a lot of old live performances, & the stories that go along with the writing & recording of these songs will only enhance your enjoyment of the album. *****
