I first saw Das Boot when it was seriallised on tv,I thought then that it was the most true to life portrayal of life in a U Boat. This DVD is far superior to what I remember from the tv. The Interior sequences are superb, and the only let down is the poor use of models in some of the exterior shots, but then again , this is not a new film so you would not expect up to date CGI effects. To finish, anybody who wants to get an idea about what life was like on a U Boat on a war patrol, from the boredom to the terror of a depth charge attack, watch this film. If you like this film I would also recommend the book Iron Coffins by H Werner
I bought this as my VHS version was getting some what grainy, having watched it so many times. This version is again a very good film to watch. But i did have reservations at first. I tried to comtact the sellar twice asking questions but i got no reply. But i will admit i had not read the full list of reviews where i did find my answer. Which was did this version have sub titles thankfully it does but you can turn them off. I did'nt want a german spoken version with subs. Still would have been nice for the sellar to have replied to my questions. But again i can now watch this film again without the grainy texture from my VHS version.
brilliant film, it is also the director's cut, which makes a lot more sense of a complex story. Could be regarded as two films...and viewed in two parts if the length is an obstacle.
Having read books from both sides of the battle of the Atlantic "Iron Coffins" and many biog's and autobiogs from surviving Frigate, Corvette and Destroyer Captains, I believe I have a pretty good insight into the coldness fear and Horror of this episode of the war.
Das Boot is an incredible film that highlights the fears, dangers and sheer hell that faced Hitlers U Boat arm. Over 90% of all U Boats were sunk and the losses in men were correspondent. Yet there was never a shortage of volunteers to man the new boats that were being commissioned.
I think this is a must for youngsters both British and German to watch--as a very committed English man I found myself still hopeing for their survival.
It is one of the most gripping films I have seen recently
A great film. Not to be missed, i enjoyed it from start to finish. A real good insight of what it must of been like as a submariner in any navy during those times. you wont be disappointed with this movie.
this is about a german sub during the war, it is really good and well done, you wont be able to take your eyes off of it from start to finish. can highly recomend.
I'm a fan of a good ole war movie, and ive only ever watched Das Boot with subtitles before. It was even better with the english dubbing, as i did'nt need to concentrate on the dialogue on screen therefore missing out on what was happening on screen action wise. The dubbing is by the original cast into english and is seamless. Fantastic movie, eyes were glued to the screen for title roll till the credits came rolling down.
watched this movie when it first came out and thought this is not a bad movie. now years later i would have to say, i class this movie as a "MUST SEE" it simply can not be missed out on lol i can almost gurantee you will enjoy this movie as much as i did thanks for reading
This was a gift for my dad. When you go to buy a non current dvd you can spend hours trawling through shops. THIS DVD WAS MINT AND NOT A COPY. I havent watched it but dad said it was good , so it must be true...
Remembered Das Boot as an excellent series always promised myself A dvd but never got round to it until now Pricing very competitive another good reason
I saw the original TV series and enjoyed it tremendously; however, the TV had those annoying subtitles blocking much of the detail in the lower screen. I spent 12 years in Germany and learned to speak the language. Therefore, a German DVD where I could switch off the subtitles seemed a good way of refreshing my language skills. And it worked. Also, the picture quality was so much better than direct off-air.
Fassbinder is a wonderful director and Prochnow was ideally cast as the star of the film. In fact, the whole cast gelled. The film takes you from the u-boot pens on the French coast, out into the Atlantic where a "wolf pack" forms to sink a convoy, through depth charges as the Allies hit back, refuelling in Spain and then back to the u-boot pens in France. I found that the film was so well made that all but the most anti-german would probably feel upset at the ending, ie after all the submariners' struggles to survive, you, the viewer, are on "their side" and want them to survive too. Unfortunately, most of them were killed in the last scene by an allied bomber attacking the U-boat pens. As the French say, "That's war". I wonder why we, the Brits, say "C'est la guerre"?
THIS FILM IS AN EPIC. IT IS SET ON BOARD A SUB, UBOAT-96, DAS BOOT PRODUCES THE TENSION AND CLAUSTROPHOBIC SENSED WHEN STALKING ITS TARGET AND WHEN HUNTED ITSELF THE STEALTH REQUIRED TO AVOID DETECTION. IT IS FILMED FROM A GERMAN PERSPECTIVE THE DIALOGUE IS IN GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES (THE BEST WAY TO WATCH IT) AND DOES INCLUDE A ENGLISH LANGUAGE VERSION. THE KRIEGSMARINE IN WORLD WAR 2 (THE SUBMARINERS) WHO FOUGHT A LONELY AND OFTEN FAR AWAY WAR THIS IS A TRIBUTE TO THEIR SKILL AND HUNTING IN PACKS THAT CAUSED SO MANY ALLIED LOSSES IN TERMS OF HUMAN LOSS AND VITAL TONNAGE BETWEEN US AND UK DESTINATIONS. THIS FILM IS OVER 3 HOURS LONG (200 MINS) AND IS BEST WATCHED WITH NO LIGHTS AND CURTAINS DRAWN TO MAXIMISE THE FEELING OF BEING AMONGST THE CREW OF THE SUB. CERTAINLY ONE OF MY BEST WAR FILMS AND PROVING DIFFICULT TO LOCATE A GOOD COPY.
Excellent script, cast and cinematography telling the story of a U-Boat crew. Oddly enough, it's probably better in the original German with english sub-titles rather than the overdubbed english. However, in whichever version it's captivating viewing.
This film is German and with the DVD you can have English spoken and or subtitles. When it was on TV (BBC) I recall it was spoken German with subtitles - which did not detract from the realism of the film, probably enhanced it.
You do get the felling you're living the action and it does get intense.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the action - even if it's from 'the other side's point of view.
This it folks as war films go they dont get any better than the likes of this, When a depth charge goes off you grab the side of the armchair even more so if you have surround sound. Das boot really does give the viewer an insite into life on board a german u-boat, the fears, the thrills and the tensions!!
this film gives you an insight into the life of german submariners and the dangers thay faced in ww2,a really fantastic film, well directed, and not one american in sight to claim thay won it single handed unlike another film where thay had to but an appolage at the end. This film is a must to get!
DAS BOOT is superbly directed by Wolfgang Petersen giving a realistic insight into the life onboard U-96, a WW2 German Uboat. To me this is one of the best WW2 films because it gives the viewer a realistic depiction rather than the over-dramatised, 'boys war comic hero' type films that are so common.Because of this, it is easy to feel that you are part of the crew sharing their fears, excitment, boredom, hopes, despair and dogged tenacity. All this and more, ending in perfect irony. This film leaves the viewer with an empathy for all that served in those iron hell holes during WW2,regardless of whose side they were fighting for.Truly a great film were a director has refused to sacrifice accuracy for a safer bet at the box office.Thankfully this gamble paid him dividends.Enjoy.
