Extraordinary, quirky science fiction thriller: a work of amazing imagination - with special effects to match. A typically spooky touch, in the city where the sun never shines, is that when Our Hero tries to get to his birthplace, everyone he asks knows where it is but no-one can remember how to get there. Highly recommended, off-beat film
A bit like Matrix 0 - the prequel. Many of the Matrix's themes were covered by DC before it's better-known rival came out, but if you like that kind of thing, you'll like this. No kung fu and more gothic.
This sort of original work is long lamented by movie fans, and it is indeed a modern classic, tho much overlooked and under-rated. Think of a mixture of the gloomy mood of The Crow or Donnie Darko and the premise of something like The Matrix and youre half way there! The Bad guys are Bad, the Good guys are lost and the whole thing seems to trundle along with menace toward the twisted conclusion.
Any self respecting movie fan could do a hell of a lot worse than this.
I bought it because I'd heard it was one of the best science fiction films around, and I wasn't dissapointed. Brilliant storyline and murky atmosphere make this one of the best examples of modern film noir. The story is on a par with the Matrix and is alot more stylised. Ireally can't think of a bad point about the film.
This film contains elements of many jamras. It is a detective film first, but the sci fi input ads to the story line unexpected twists & turns. The cast put in a fine performance without being over shadowed by the 1st class special effects.
This is a dark film a sci-fi meets detective movie. A combination of The Matrix/Metropolis/Hellraiser/Puppet master. The lead "strangers" Mr.Hand and Mr.Book very ably played by Richard O'Brian and Ian Richardson sinister and bizarre in equal measure- offering us the Cenobites in a different guise. The hero of the piece John was adequate although a little bland the heroine the lovely Jennifer Connelly has performed better although lends each scene a classic 30's beauty which would have been hard to cast an alternative for. Dr Schraber's would be hard to play -a combination Judas/Moreau/Dr Yueh- Kiefer Sutherland responds to the challange well . On the whole the baddies out perform the goodies with skill and good casting . Nice twist at the end
An excellent film starring Keifer Sutherland with a very dark atmospeheric setting and a a great story line. A very slick looking film with an intersting twist.
If you like films along the lines of the Crow and Dune this will appeal.
Not too many people know about this film and its certainly well worth picking up one on ebay.
Can't say much more witout givingn the plot away but its a good sci-fi film with good production and direction , decent actors and a good solid plot.
I remember watching this at the cinema and not having seen it since I was not disappointed its a good thriller with some twists and turns well worth watching
This movie is absolutely one of my favourites so I bought it because I wanted to include it in my rather small collection of DVD's. The most impressive feature of the movie is the dark and gloomy atmosphere and background and all the realistic data-produced scenery in it. The story reminds me a bit of the movie 'Brave new world'(from the book by Aldous Huxley) and '1984' the movie made upon Orwells book, but as a movie Dark City is much more successful I think. So in the whole sci-fi genre I rank this movie among Alien1 and 2001 A space oddesey regarding quality and orginality. Brave new world, 1984, Matrix and Dark City; these four movies has a common denominator: they all deal with the totaltarian society and tries to tell us what might happen if we don't value the society we live in today (democracy). In all these movies the prospect of what we might end up with is of course caricated and taken to an extreme fiction world, but there is no doubt what the directors/authors want to tell us. All the main actors are doing a very good performance and Jenifer Conelly is always a fine lady to watch. Higly recommended movie.
Again, an upgrade from VHS, but definately on the buy again list. Very watchable, fairly orginal concept (although ideas can be noted from other films) and good pace. The finale is classically over the top in an almost comic book fashion, which adds to the humour of the film. Kiefer Sutherland and Richard O'Brian make for quirky characters, but superb as always. Absolute thumbs up if you like Cult classics.
