This cd does exactly what it says on the label 'An Introduction To Marc Bolan'.... But what an introduction.. It is such a brilliant energy based double disc compilation, that flies at a thousand miles an hour right from the first blocked 'E' chord on 20th Century Boy.. There's 45 tracks spread over 2 cd's and 2 and a half hours of music.. This set is interesting from a lot of points. Firstly it has been compiled by Bolan fanatic and great musician in his own right Dr.Robert (Blow Monkey's), who also wrote some fine sleeve notes to go with it... His choice of tracks has been impecable - missing certain singles in favour of slightly more obscure numbers such as 'Blackjack', 'Pain and Love' and 'Sky Church Music'.
Never let it be said that Bolan's songs all sounded the same, as the mix in tempo from full in your face rockers such as 'Mad Donna', 'Buick MacKane' and 'Solid Gold Easy Action', are beautifully balanced out with stunning slower paced gems like 'Sitting Here', 'Free Angel' and 'Dawn Storm' ... There's also a nice mix of Gospel with the wonderdul 'Sky Church Music' and 'Gardenia & The Mighty Slug'... The lyrical inspiration is just dazzling throughout the entire proceedings -
It should be noted that the material featured in this compilation is drawn from Marc's peak period onward (his tenure at EMI)... It therefore misses all the material recorded for Regal Zonophoine and Fly - including Jeepster, Get It On, Hot Love and Ride A White Swan... But do you know, for the first time in one of these type of compilations it doesn't really matter as you are left with Bolan the star.. An individual so ahead of his time that it literally screams out at you from most of the tracks...
I would wholeheartadly recommend this set - even to established fans such as myself, and would give it a massive thumbs up, as this is the type of compilation that gets casual buyers wanting more..... much much more......
a great cd with a full and fantastic range of marc bolans talent includeing some of his hits and also some of his great earlier songs, a pure genius at work on this brilliant double cd.
