Based on a true story of the cheque forger and con man Frank W Abagnale Jr who pretends to be a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer. He makes millions and becomes a target for the FBI especially agent Carl Hanratty played by Tom Hanks (Has he ever been in a poor film?). The cat and mouse chase that ensues is well written and shot and is a first.... a film with Leonado Dicaprio in it that I like.
Steven Spielberg directs this incredible-but-true story of the young life of Frank Abagnale Jr. Following the traumatic divorce of his beloved parents (Christopher Walken and Nathalie Baye) in the 1960s, at age sixteen Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes AWOL, becoming a prodigious cheque forger and impersonator of a Pan-Am pilot, a doctor and lawyer. Soon he has the FBI fraud squad on his trail, in particular dogged agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks), who carries on a game of cat-and-mouse with Abagnale over a few years.
DiCaprio gives a grandly charming performance as Frank Abagnale, Jr. a teenager who adopted the professional guises of airplane pilot, physician and lawyer to front his check kiting schematic modus operandi during the 1960s and eventually making the FBI's most wanted list by bilking millions until his capture and imprisonment. Based on Abagnale's best-selling memoir and adapted with lean storytelling by Jeff Nathanson, the film never lets up in the giddy cat-and-mouse/Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote relationship between fugitive DiCaprio and amalgamated FBI square Hanks (replete with thick as clam chowder Boston accent, dorky specs and porkpie hat) one step behind his two-steps ahead prey and a unique dynamic of a father/son esthetic. Walken gives an Oscar worthy supporting turn as the elder Abagnale whose financial woes and tanglement with the IRS acts as his son's catalyst. Once again filmmaker Steven Spielberg makes popular entertainment into a work of art.
A great film with wonderful performances from Tom Hanks and Leonardo Di Caprio. It even spawned a catch phrase in my family - "Even better". It really makes you feel for the characters. It's one of those films that you can watch again and again.
I wanted the edition of the dvd with extras to add to the viewing experience. If I really like a film, I'm always interested to know more about it.
This film is the one I often take out when someone complains about Leonardo DiCaprios acting (this or 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?') or when people start to say that all Spielberg can mange is outrageous fantasy films with annoying children. It is a brilliant fil altogether. It is actually best compared to the British tv series 'Hustle'. Both focus on con artists and both are similarly amazing, provoking an unmistakeable feeling of joy whenever a character has pulled off a particularly daring con and the beautiful jazzy soundtrack of John Williams begins. There is no one I wouldn't reccomend this film to, it is a real stunner in production design, acting, humour, and excitement.
