Canon Power Shot G9

The latest Canon PowerShot G9 Digital Compact Camera is excellent for when you don't want to lug your SLR around with you. With it's 12MP censor, which is capable of good quality A3 prints. RAW and JPEG recording on SD SDHC. Six Times Optical Zoom. ISO up to 1600, but personaly anything over ISO 400 and noise is present, at ISO 800 then things really dont look that great. Its 35 to 210 mm lens at F2.8 - F4.8 gives sharp crisp images as long as the ISO rating is set low. Includes Canon's Image Stabliser for blur free low light or slow shutter speed situations, something usaully found on their high end SLR lenses. Most of the presets found on your SLR can be found on the G9, like AV TV M modes as well as custom fuctions and creative functions, like Portriat, Macro, Landscape, Low Light, etc.
The G9 is easy to use once you played with it for half an hour or so. There are a lot of functions and menu's to get through, but after a quick flic through the instuctions and evrything becomes clear. If I could think of one thing I would like to be different, it would have to be the focal range. I would of much prefered something of around 28mm if not 24mm for those wide angle shots, 35mm is not wide enough. That said, Canon do provide as an optional extra, both wide and tele converters for the G9. The camera is also compatable with Canon's range of Speedlite Flash guns, although it doe's become quite a hand full when you have one of the larger Speedlites fitted, best to use the 220ex model. Large 3in LCD is very clear and consistant, but make sure you protect it with some kind of hood or film.
To summerise, It is a good all rounder, a very capable camera. I use mine for Street and Travel Photography for those days when it is to hot to carry a full SLR kit around, but it is no way a replacement for your SLR. The limitations of the 35mm end of the lens, makes it unsuitable for most Landscape Situations, but apart from that, its a excellent little compact. I even shot a wedding on mine when the officail photographer did'nt show. The photos were very good for a camera that you can buy for under £300, and the couple were very happy with their wedding Photo's
