EOS - 5D - A camera ahead of its time?

I have been a keen amatuer photographer since I was a kid in the 50s and later I was a photographic printer for a Studio in London. A keen film man with 35mm and medium format (6x7) gear and a darkroom. I wanter to branch into the digital world my only digital was a Canon G5 compact which I used for 'snappying'. I had several Canon lenses which I used with my EOS 5 film camera. My main interest is in wide angle landscapes so the cameras with 'C' sized sensors were ruled out by the magnification factor of the smaller sensors - I rarely use long lenses. I brought this camera because it fitted my needs in all aspects. The EOS 1D series cameras are fine but I have no need of shootting umpteen frames per second! All my exsisting lenses stay the same focal length on my EOS 5 and my new EOS 5D - wonderful. The specs of this camera are quite awesome and can be found elsewhere. In use, I am hard pressed to fault it (or the 24-105 L lens I mainly use with it. I am still a film man at heart but this camera is slowly winning me over to the 21st century digital age!
If you want ultra rapid fire and are into sports and journlistic photography get a EOS 1Dxxx but if you want a more considered approach get A EOS 5D - I can't fault it.

Canon EOS-5D Body Only Digital Camera

Previously an EOS 20D user - and now a 5D owner - I only have experience of Canon DSLRs. I mention this upfront because if you just want to know whether this camera is better than competitive brands, this review isn't the one you are looking for.

To sum up I think this is a great camera at a slightly steep price which will suit enthusiasts and semi-professionals alike. I'd put money on it that many professional photographers are using this as their premium back-up camera although many also like to have two of the same to avoid confusion with slightly different systems under duress.

This camera is marketed towards those enthusiasts and the semi-pro market particularly and doesn't claim to replace the top end cameras such as the EOS 1D family. It doesn't come up to par with them in several ways. The way in which it does match the higher end cameras though is in potential image quality.

BUILD
The 5D chassis is based on a magnesium alloy and stainless steel and is similar to the EOS 20D although it is a lot heavier and feels more solid in my hand. The build is high quality but not as rugged as cameras of a higher price which can survive greater shocks without failing. It doesn't feature the same high quality environment-resistant seals as the pro range either. That means that technically it isn't as dust and weather resistant.

I've shot in rain, snow, gig / nightclub environments on location, abroad and indoors with this camera and I haven't had any problems with fragility. Maybe if I was part of the paparazzi, or extreme photographer this camera would be a risky choice. I have dropped and thrown my 20D with reasonable force a few times during energetic shoots and it was fine - though I smashed the flash sitting on top of it. I suspect in similar circumstances the 5D would have performed equally well.

Frankly I think in use (by non-extreme-pros) this camera is as rugged as it needs to be for you to have confidence that it will continue to work well if you treat it with the dignity the price tag suggests. If you double the price tag then sure you could probably buy a camera you can play catch with it, maybe. If you decide you want to be safer if you accidentally throw the camera around, you can buy third party 'camera armour' which fits this model.

The weight of this body is noticeable straight away, especially if you are used to the standard consumer models. It isn't ridiculously heavy, but if you are not used to handling larger cameras it could slow you down. It doesn't bother me, I just notice it when I pick up the camera with a small light lens and it's still quite weighty (about 31.2 ounces including battery).

The viewfinder is a really nice size, a 2.5" extravaganza which clearly shows the image and colors and allows a better impression of what you are reviewing than smaller formats allow. However, the 5D (like the 20D) has a very bright color LCD display (by default) which can give the user a false impression of how well the image is exposed. You can turn this brightness down, but you may still have to change the 'gamma' of your monitor to match that of the Canon screen. Even then, in the field, the LCD preview can be misleading.

  ISO noise ? What noise?
Review created: 08/08/08

Well I've owned 3 Canon 30D cameras and loved them but I decided to change one of them to a 5D and now I want another one! Virtually the same camera except the 5D feels better to hold. Even at ISO 1600 there doesn't seem to be any noise in the pictures it takes (i've yet to try ISO 3200) which is amazing because although the 30D was good - it wasn't quite that good at the higher ISO's. It's been a bit difficult getting used to the different lenses (the 5D doesn't accept the EF-s Lenses that I used on my 30D but the fact that it's a full-frame sensor means that the lenses are much wider now so a 28mm lens is not quite as limited any more. If you're a 30D owner and are considering a change - don't get the 40d get the 5D - you'll be amazed!

Being a Canon user for over 25years I had been using the 30D which is a super bit of kit in itself, I finally took the plunge and bought the 5D the build quality and ease of use is just superb, the full frame and 12 megapixel + gives the photos the extra punch to make the difference.
I would highly recommend this Camera.

A very good camera simple and easy to use. Far more reliable than it 1Dmk III stable mate. After a few tweaks from the custom settings and it is a very user friendly camera that is great for landscape and portrait photography, Can be used for wildlife but with a low frame pre second you and miss a couple of shots that you would get with the faster Canons. A excellent bit of kit that is at home in any photographers kit bag.

  Exellent EOS-5D
Review created: 12/06/08

After having some difficulty trying to get hold of an EOS-5D I finally managed to get my hands on this excellent piece of kit. I wanted a step up from shooting professional shoots with my 400D to the 5D with it's full frame 35mm sensor. It arrived in near perfect condition with only a few minor scuffs and faint scrathes which were mentioned in the description... so no hidden surprises! It also came with an genuine Canon Remote control which has come in very handy. It also had a brand new strap. The picture quality is very good, a giant leap from what I've been used to and I can take advantage of my lenses without crop conversion. Overall I am very, very happy with this item.

  Wonderful camera
Review created: 20/04/08(updated 20/04/08)

The best camera I have ever owned. Flawless as far as I'm concerned. I've had mine for 2 years and can never fault it. Sharp, clear, colour correct, full sized sensor.

The only issue is that you do need the high spec (L series) lenses to get the most out of it. The cheap lenses fade in quality towards the edges and with a full sizes sensor you need a lens that gives quality all the way. I use it mostly with the L Series 24-70mm lens. It's perfect for me, why pay more?

eos 5d best iq price balance on the net
Review created: 24/03/08
by:

I had been looking for good iq for birding/landscape/macro photography and after many hours reading dedicated forums I elected the 5d against the 40d or a 1d mark II
iq is outstanding so it's quite easy to crop to bring your subject closer; with the 300mm f2.8 l lens it gives me 900mm with a 3x kenko pro extender and 600 with a 2x. The quality of the lens is so good that your can achieve very decent results, especially as high iso value show little noise ( 50 iso to 3200 ) you can shoot within building without flash
the camera is fast and quite silent
static birds are amazing with this camera and with suitable settings ( af servo, center focus point with invisibla asssit points activated etc...) tracking birds in flight is manageable
I'd have prefered a markII ( 45 af points here ) but it was 1600 euros vs 1200 for the 5d and the 40d is just too sensitive to extenders that give you a smaller aperture than 5.6, not so the 5d
I've used it on rainy days with both a 3x and 2x and it does af quite nicely
it's easy to customize the camera though a second "c" position would be nice
there is indeed some dust issues but a blower does help

My english is bad but I can try. I had a dream long time for this class of camera. Before I had one wery used near out of order, but with good lenses fitted to Canon EOS type. Camera I bay Canon EOS 5D is proffesional but little smaller then canon:s other pro cameras. 5D have full size sensor and 12,8 Meg-pixel. I am combination amature and proffs photograf. Sometimes I can take money for my pictures, speciellt from product pictures for prints.
Until now I don´t dislike anything and I am happy for my new camera.

  Canon EOS 5D
Review created: 10/02/08

It is difficult to find anything to critcise about this camera. I am one of those who spent a long time hesitating to switch from film to digital, being very satisfied with an EOS 50 body and a fair selection of lenses, and a working darkroom. In the end I tested the waters with a Canon D60 (acquired on eBay), which gave me some very satisfactory results. The only problem was that wide-angle views were more restricted, because of the sensor size.

With the 5D, I now have the full-frame sensor and the wide-angle views restored. The mechanics are superb, the facilities far above the EOS 50, and all my lenses are showing their full capabilities in huge digital enlargements. What more could I ask for?

  Great full-frame digital SLR
Review created: 26/01/08

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this camera because I have used a film EOS-5 for many years and have five lenses which I wanted to work with the same perspective in a digital SLR. Not many digital SLRs have full-frame sensors (most will increase the effective focal length of a lens by a factor of 1.3 or 1.6). Although I am a demanding amateur, I still find the price of a new EOS-5D too high, but I found a virtually new 'open-box' one for half the price on eBay. This camera works extremely well, is robust and feels just like my film EOS-5, which I still use. Even though it has lots of advanced features, as one would expect, it is remarkably easy to use. I particularly like the results obtained in relatively low-light situations without a flash (with a high ISO setting). I cannot fault this camera.

I already got a free PS3, Wii, and XBOX Elite without even having to ask my friends for help - there's lots of people online who want a free iPhone like you! One of the easiest ways to get a referral is to do a favour for a friend and ask them to sign up in return. That way, you both can get a free iPhone!

- Use real information - this is a proven legitimate site and they will not give out your information.
- Only complete each offer once! You cannot complete the same offer again, even for different freebies.
- Don't try to cheat the system. This site has been proven legitimate, and they will catch you if you try to cheat. If you do everything legitimately, by following this guide, you will get a free iPhone!

  The Daddy of Cameras

I have recently converted to DSLR's from film. My first digital camera was a 400D, while this is a fine camera I quickly out grew it, the controls are a bit clumsy you have to look at the back of the camera to alter many settings, which makes it slower to change settings. Not that I need rapid shooting a lot of my work is wedding and landscape photography, and often need to change settings quickly. With the 5D most major setting changes can be adjusted with the camera at the eye, not unlike the 1D range. The most amzing thing about this camera is the images it produces, there is a certain smoothness about the picture right up to ISO 1600 photographs print astoundingly. I've borrowed a 1D mark2n and the picture quality does not seem as smooth. There is one down side to this camera though, my standard lens for many years was the EF24-85mm which was fine on film, excellent on the 400D, on the 5D oh dear. I bit the bullet and started buying L series glass, starting with the 24-70 f2.8 see my review, the only camera I would swop this one for is the 16.7 mega pixel 1Ds or a newer version of this camera.
