Excellent Price versus function balance. Most of the features of the 30d but with the price, size and weight of the 350d. Being a consumer level SLR means that the cheaper accessories are still avail e.g. RC1 or 5 remote controller can be used.
I would only rate the Nikon D80 higher although I went with the 400d because the Canon lenses offer far superior value for money.
Having purchased a 400D in February, I've enjoyed my move from traditional 35mm SLR to digital... I've been through the range for those with good memories.. I went through a lot of Olympus kit, then the Canon AE-1, the T90, the EOS10(35mm), followed by my last film camera the 50E.
I waited and waited for the 400D to come along - a decent spec'd camera for not so silly money. I've had some lovely shots out of it whilst travelling the UK, Hong Kong and Singapore... I've not used it as much as I'd wanted - but that's a personal time thing..
It has some great in built 'modes' as well as the usual aperture/shutter priority modes and good old fashioned completely manual...
I've used the 17-85mm and 10-22mm EF-S lenses, and both have been superb. I'd avoid the stock 18-55mm lens though. It's ok to get you going - but look how many are for sale on Ebay.. Better investing in better equipment if your budget allows.
The 400D has a built in flash, but for those of you who want more - don't automatically buy the Canon flashgun.. I purchased Metz 54AF-1 (Canon) that has all the TTL controls, but in my opinion is a far greater flashgun (has 2 flash heads in one!)
In summary - The camera has been great, the range of accessories is huge, and the ability of the camera to deliver is unrivalled.
There are many 400D happy owners out there - you should become one of them! If you are on 35mm film - now's the time to change... You won't regret it.
They take back under warranty and then tell you the case is damaged. It wasn't when it left me to go back to them - in its original packaging I might add. Cost me a packet under warranty and weeks of hassling. But they had my camera so I had to cough up to get it back. Very nasty manufacturer. Don't buy one with any faults!
Anyone who says one of the most succesful cameras in the market is adequate as I have read here has frankly no idea what they are talking about. Yes of course you can get better but not in this price range. This camera is pitched at the amature photographer. Mostly for those who are beginners with DSLRs. I personally know 3 people that own one and have no plans to get anything else. Some of my photos taken with my 400d have been published. I think that goes a long way to justifying just how good this camera is. Worth every penny and highly recomended.
Upgraded from the 350D, both good but the 400D is worth the extra, LCD display is massive and very easy to see at all angles. Controls more user friendly and more choice, the improved picture quality is noticeable, both these cameras handle better with battery grips but they do add Waite and size, I would recommend this camera
Purchased the camera and lens kit from Canon and liked it, at first, then I tried a days shooting out in the big wide world.
The exposure was not consistent. Even on continuous mode the exposure would vary to an excessive degree.
The reaction from Canon, I would have to find out if it is the lens or the body that was at fault (both from them and brand new) and send, at my cost, to a repair centre and dont forget to package it well and insure it.
Canon policy was that I could not get a refund as the camera was over 7 days old.
Fortunately I know more about consumer law and after a quick e-mail I got my refund but will not be buying from them again with this sort of backup.
