Don't confuse this with the IS versions, this is a cheap and cheerful lens. It covers a good range but isn't the best piece of glass in the world.
While it is a USM lens it is NOT the ring-USM, so it's slower, noisier, and has to be switched between manual and automatic modes. The front element rotates during focussing, so you can't use petal hoods, and using polarising or graduated filters is a pain. List price for this lens is a little over £200, but the best internet price for a new one is around £150, so be careful what you bid to on ebay.
Summary: Consider the 100-300mm USM, which is optically better, and has faster focus, or the IS version which is significantly better.

Its a good zoom lens for the cost. Generally considered a beginner's lens, it has all the good quality of a conon make. Its light, versatle and fast focussing for its size. I have taken some excellent pictures using this lens. And its sturdy enough to be taken on travels and treks.
