I dislike the fact that the product I bought was actually a free DVD from a newspaper (costing £15 inc postage. So it has no scene selection features which is one of the main reasons for wanting to buy it in the first place.
This was the first time that i used ebay. I will never use ebay again!
Great film which I've watched a number of times. Bought it years ago on VHS so wanted DVD version but disappointed that I got a free version which was issued with a newspaper. My fault for not reading the description closely! The film itself has a strong story throughout and the acting for the speaking parts is excellent by all. If you are not a musician, it's still great to watch, but if you a Brass Band fan, Tara Fitzgerald's mime to the Flugel Solo is poor! The likeness to what really happens at Brass Band Area Qualifier Contests is ridiculous, but the whole film is still very highly recommended and something which you will never get tired of watching!!
This is a funny yet poignant film with some excellent acting performances, especially from Pete Postlewaite. The quality of the DVD itself was very good and it is thoroughly recommended both as entertainment as well as as a snapshot of the heart-rending upheaval that the pit closures brought to the communities depicted here.
slowly changing my video collection to dvd, delighted to get this one,it tells of a bittersweet story of yorkshire miners struggling with pit closures, family problems,no money, but the leading character danny, these dont seem to bother him all he cares for is the colliery band, to which he is the band leader and is hell bent on getting them to the prize band finals at the albert hall, but illness, more family tradagies just see them to the finishing line.i am not a big brass band fan but i love this film,so much i manage to get the soundtrack music off ebay as well. if you never seen this film,go on treat yourself and dont forget the tissues.
Brassed off! is an excellent film. However, in future I will buy 'full price' DVDs instead of demos. The fact that you can only watch the film from the beginning each time rather than continue at a later date makes it less likely to be watched.
Brassed Off is the story of the Grimley Colliery in 1992. With an uncertain future for the pit , it could also be the demise of the colliery band.It tells the individual stories of the band members , their struggles with the unions and their everyday lives . It also tells the love story of Gloria ( Tara Fitzgerald ) and Andy ( Ewan McGregor ) .With the closure of the pit imminent can the band survive to make it to the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall. It also stars Pete Postlewaite and Stephen Tompkinson. In my mind a classic British film to stand along side films like the Full Monty
I decided to buy this DVD because I saw a documentary on the making of this film. The film is set during the miners strike of the 80s. I'm glad I bought it because it shows raw emotions not just from the miners point of view but from the families point of view likewise. It is not just an expose of the rights and wrongs of the pit closures but a film that tugs at the emotions. Through the film runs the theme of destruction of a lifestyle and the coming to terms of those involved but also the theme of triumph over adversity as epitomised by Postlethwaite's character being confined to hospital and turning up at the final concert. Pete Postlethwaite, Ewan McGregor, and Tara Fitzgerald are excellent in the main roles but are more than ably supported by the other cast members, including Stephen Tompkinson. At the finale when the band plays the William Tell overture all you want to do is break into tears. the film was shot in the north in an actual pit village, they had to rebuild the pit head for the making of the film as the original had been removed upon closure of the pit. this is a film for all the family but likewise you could play it with a bottle of beer in hand with a pizza on the side. All in all this film is a must see.
I bought this mainly because it was filmed about 8 miles from me and I used to work at Grimethorpe colliery on which the film was based , it is very much like the real events of the time in which the film is set and the acting is first class. I am so pleased that I bought it .
Brassed Off is based around a true story of Grimethorpe Colliery Band in Barnsley South Yorkshire. It was filmed throughout South Yorkshire. It's an excellent film that makes me laugh, cry and angry in places, an all round great film! I've owned the film on VHS since it's release date, but having watched it numerous times, i've lost count! I had to replace it on DVD. Definately recomend the film.
Classic well written comedy, having been brought up around brass bands (but not played in one) this film gives a small insight into the people who are in them some classic lines and an easy film to watch
