The grandaddy of all Vamp films, Oldman does the Count proud in this film, Reeves' accent is a little dodgy but all told a fab retelling of the classic story

  Dracula
Review created: 06/05/08

I bought this DVD because over the past few years I have watched it time and time again and it is usually on very late. It is a lovely story and the first couple of times I found it scary in parts, it takes a lot to scare me! The whole film is so well put together with just the right amount of everything - the love story, the scariness, fantasy and of course the sadness at the end.

  My all time favourite film!

I have seen this film that many times, i have lost count! Im still not fed up with it! The intensity that the two main actors share is what keeps me coming back for more! Gary Oldman is fanstatic as the very intense and sexy Dracula,
Winona Ryder is excellent as the beutiful and innocent Mina, and of course the very handsome Keanu Reeves as Mina's love Johnathon Harker. Not forgetting Anthony Hopkins as the eccentric, Doctor Van Helsing!
If you love vampire films you must see this one!

  An Opulent Masterpiece
Review created: 27/04/08

Bram Stoker's Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola is a wonderful film. It is filled with beautiful sets, exquisite costumes, excellent make-up effects and brilliantly melodramatic performances.

Gary Oldman stars as the Count, a man who sold his soul to Satan after his wife, Elisabeta, killed herself on receiving false news of his death in battle. He is ultimately made immortal by his Master and years later, meets Jonathan Harker, a younger lawyer who has come to negotiate his buying land in England. It is at this moment that Dracula sees a photograph of Jonathan's betrothed, Mina, who bears a striking resemblance to his own love, Elisabeta. He consequently imprisons Harker and travels to England to wreak havoc and to find the woman he believes to be the reincarnation of his lost wife.

The film remains very faithful to the novel throughout which is refreshing, given the usual Hollywood tendency to "re-imagine" or change the source completely. The performances on the whole are excellent - dodgy accents and Keanu Reeves aside - and are believable in the horrific context of the story, which shocks and seduces in equal measure. Anthony Hopkins' crazed turn as Professor Van Helsing is inspired and Gary Oldman attacks the role of Dracula with great relish and is tremendous in the role.

The film was awarded three Oscars - for Best Costume Design, Best Effects and Best Make-up - and various other accolades, and is easily one of the best films of the 1990s. This film is a must see for any Dracula/vampire fan, any fan of Francis Ford Coppola or anyone who loves a good film.

In the end its a love story
Review created: 09/07/07

‘Bram Stokers Dracula’ is the probably the most amazing love story I have ever seen. It begins in 1947 when Prince Vlad (Gary Oldman) has to unwillingly leave his Princess Elizabeta (Winona Ryder) to go and fight for Christianity. In a state of confusion Elizabeta thinks Vlad has been killed and she commits suicide. He enrages against the religion and takes on an immortal vow to renounce Christianity. Hence, Count Dracula is created. Elizabeta is reincarnated in the 15th Century as Mina, fiancée of Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) and the film although typically a horror has this love triangle beneath it. It is directed by Francis Ford Coppola. If you haven’t seen it, you should, and when you watch it consider the love story behind it.

  Bram Stoker's Dracula

Normally, I don't like novel adaptated into films. But this film seems to be an exception to that. It's wonderfully adapted and there is a fabulous crew line up aswell. Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves star in this dark, mysterious, Gothic romance novel. At least, I think it is a romance novel...just with some gruesome biting involved!! I would honestly recommend this to anyone thinking of buying this. It's a uperb film and I am currently enjoying the ownership of it!

  Bram Stoker's Dracula (DVD 1999)
Review created: 03/11/06(updated 21/07/07)

Despite the apparant bad acting that was present in this film - I never payed any attention to this as I was captivated at the very beginning by the lavish backgrounds and elaborate scope of the film - besides Gary Oldman is brilliant as Dracula! And you can't go wrong having Antony Hopkins either!
This film is very sexual at times! Something I think may have been uneccessary, but it does add somehing to it!
Buy this if you are into anything gory and sexy but with a deep story to go with it - very dark and gothic - love it!

  Horrific; Romantic; Passionate.
Review created: 17/10/05
by:

Despite Keanu Reeves' terrible portrayal of Jonathan Harker, this film adaptation of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' has captured the true essence of the novel.
This movie highlights the romanticism behind Dracula's horrific themes. It brings audience apathy to nearly every character. Dark and eary, this is not the film to watch if you are in the mood for looking at pretty things!
The film sticks very closely to Bram Stoker's novel. I read the novel first, and loved it! A lot of 'Dracula' movies completely miss the point, and tear up the original Russian vampire laws. Dracula is a myth and legend all rolled into one, and this is the only film which i have seen to do the novel justice.
