Black Hawk Down (DVD 2002)

I've been watching this movie and its accompanying extras on DVD this week for the first time and I thought is ironic that this very American war story should be directed and produced by an Englishman (Ridley Scott) and have a large number of British actors cast as the American servicemen (Ewan McGregor, Jasson Issacs, Hugh Dancy, Euan Bremner, Orlando Bloom.) I suppose it's the equivalent of Steven Spielberg directing a film about the Battle of Goose Green during the Falklands War and casting Americans as members of the Parachute Regiment

Scott's movie is quite brave in that it has no major stars and no central character (unlike, say Tom Hanks in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN or Mel Gibson in WHEN WE WERE SOLDIERS). It's also largely free of the clichés of the genre: no soaring John Williams score accompanying shots of the flag fluttering in the sunlight; no scenes of the families back home. Instead its all about the logistics and the absolute horror of battle. This is the best combat footage since ZULU way back in 1964, a film which it resembles. In Scott's commentary description words, it is 'Anti-War but pro-military'.

On doubt this is an excellent film. I already own it on DVD but I bought it on Blu ray as well. To be honest I watched it once and then sold it on because it was not that much better than the DVD version both in terms on visuals and sounds.

A Very realistic war film with a good storyline with great acting.

Forget the typical run of the mill war films, the americans roll in fill everyone with lead and go home happy.No. This film can be easily compared as the film that does the same as saving private ryan did for WWII, but in a modern warzone. Things go wrong,the "good guys" get hurt.
Reccomended for any action film lover.

This must rate as one of the most realistic combat movies ever made.Ridley Scott excels in portraying a very realistic account of what happens when US troops,who were part of a UN relief operation in Somalia get caught in a vicious battle for survival trying to escape from Mogadishu after a bungled operation.The action is fast paced,realistic to the extent of being gruesome,and with meticulous attention to detail.It keeps you glued to the screen from start to finish.
If you are into these kind of movies,you'll love it.one word of caution though.dont watch it with kids around.you dont want them to see men being shot to bits and body parts lying around.apart from that,the movie itself is flawless.

I remember reading about this film when it was first released and thinking I would like to see it but like a lot of things I never got around to it.
I came across it when looking for something else and bought it.
I enjoyed the film even with all the American bull, all action and not a bad story line.

A good , gritty litle story. Set in Somalia.When a soldier falls from his helicopter patrolling a war ravaged country. The rescue mission goes from bad to worse, when the rescue copter ( Black Hawk ). Gets shot down. The rush to rescue survivors and the hardware, leads to some intense fighting scenes, and the usual good guy , bad guy,american fight buddy drama. All good fun, (Where's Arnie & Sly , when you need them? ) Very watchable.

You really have to see this film on Blu Ray to appreciate that the PlayStation 3 is not just about playing games. Shocking and touching in equal measure this dramatisation of America's ill fated foray into Somalia brings home the futility and human cost of war. Whilst on conventional DVD it is easy to lose track of the characters (all in camoflage and helmets) on Blu Ray they remain recognisable. Gut wrenching but compelling. Highly recommended (but perhaps not for valentines day viewing).

As other people have mentioned - I wouldn't buy this film to keep, but to watch through once was 'enjoyable' - if war movies are your thing. This is based on a true story, which draws you in more, with some classic acting. But the theme is rather 'America saves the day'. I definately recommend it to view the once, but not for the all time favourites shelf. Quite long running time too...

I like this film but I wouldn't buy it. It's one of those that if you see once it's enough. It's loosely based (US Made then!) on a true story, which makes it quite harrowing. I didn't see many Somalis in the film, the actors who played baddies seemed more central African in their looks. This affected my enjoyment of the film somewhat.

Black Hawk Down is highly entertaining action film.
The film really shows the reality of war and provides sense of what it is like.
Exceptional acting. The film may be over 2 hours but it doesn't seem it.
Black Hawk Down is a must have for fans of war and action films, and in my opinion is an all time great.

decided to buy this for my partner after listening to him going on about how good a film it was and that he wished he had a copy.He was well pleased.

I bought the film because I'd seen it before and I liked it very much. It's quite a simple story but pictures and music are really state-of-the-art. And even though Americans are not surprisingly shown as the good guys, there is really tolerable amount of pathos. The film is supposed to be based on actual events but I don't know to what extent. For example I hardly believe that all the soldiers taking part in the action were so sympathetic. If it was really the upper crust of soldiers at least some of them should be unfeeling killing machines. Idealized a bit it may be still I would recommend it to all who like war films. Women probably won't enjoy it (people are killing each other and there is no love).
Also this dvd has a lot of goodies like: making of, commentaries, drawings etc.

Black Hawk down is a gritty, action-packed movie spilling into gulf warfare combat in Nigeria. A great cast of soldiers you will recognise from all over tv, mixed with a high-budget making stunt seqeunces incredible. A rollercoaster ride from start to finish.
Any issue's you should have? Well for some it can be too violent and gorey, and it's a long one but I didnt have any issues with it.

Excellent quality DVD at a bargain price. This is a genuine copy of this film. The photography and sound quality is absolutely first rate. Highly recommended.

It's violent. It's politically incorrect and historically inaccurate. But hell, I've seen this about half a dozen times and it's still a great military yarn and one of the few set nearer to the present day that seem to work. The street battles , the bloodied up convoy and marooned squad make for a variety of tense and compelling storylines, alongside the core plot of rescuing the downed chopper pilots. A bullet fest and not one for the kids as it really does treat the local population as ready made casualties. But if if you view this sensibly Scott has added his directorial skills to spectacular effect.

I liked the introductuary dvd which explained the whole meaning of the film.The actors portrayed the charactors with great sympathey and realty,I am not surprised that it won an oscar.It was a shame it took such a long time to come from the e bayer,but I gave them a good feedback and it was well worth the wait.Spider Sue

As this was a true story,I don't no how much poetical licence was given to the facts by the script writer. If it was true then I am completely amazed how the General became a General in Modern warfare, as he obviously must have been watching some of the World War 1 scenes of sending Millions of men to their deaths for no reason. here we have a helicopter shot down,and a considerable number of "good guy Americans"getting killed to retreive their six dead bodies. No matter what the cost we will do it. The film itself was full of action,bit of bodies flying everywhere, and to what end....Very watchable,full of action but you have to ask(SNAFU)Situation Normal all Fcuked Up, why did they waste more life.
