This is the debut album from LA based hard rock band Guns N' Roses. Prior to this LP they were an unknown glam rock band who played live around the clubs of Sunset Strip and had issued one live EP which got nowhere.
Beginning with the hit "Welcome to the Jungle" this album combines elements of heavy metal, punk rock, blues and classic, anthemic choruses. The album was a #1 American hit and worldwide sales exceeded 25 million. It is an RIAA Certified Diamond Album, and it's not hard to see why.
Even if you look at the cover and think you'd hate the music you might be surprised. There are explicit lyrics, loud guitar solos and screaming vocals, but there are some softer gems too especially the hit "Sweet Child O'Mine" which lyrically is quite moving. The majority of the lyrics are about the way they were living during the recording which was the proverbial sex, drugs and rock n roll lifestyle.
Other songs on the album reflect the band's reaction to the debauchery of the L.A. rock and roll underground, such as "Welcome to the Jungle" (ironically, Axl Rose wrote the lyrics while in Seattle) and "Out Ta Get Me", as well as their assorted female companions, reflected in the songs "Sweet Child O' Mine", "My Michelle", "You're Crazy" and "Rocket Queen".
This is the definitive Guns 'N' Roses album, if you don't have it buy it! A nice mix of soft and noisy tracks, with the emphasis on the noisy, and a wonderful sense of musicality that sets Guns 'N' Roses aside from pure noise metal bands.
When I first bought this all those years ago it was on cassette. As cassettes are now a thing of the past I decided to buy it on CD so I could still listen to it as I no longer have a cassette player. Even though it is now about 15 years old, I think it is still as good as ever and would recommend it to anyone who likes that sort of music as it will never go out of fashion.
