With much to offer American Gangster sells it's self if you know your films. Two of hollywoods heavyweights in the lead roles ,Russell Crowe & Denzel Washington both winner's of the Best Actor Oscar, going head to head in this tense battle between two men on different sides of the law. Russel Crowe is great as the down and out cop with nothing to lose. Always a worthy nemisis to Denzel Washington's millionaire crime boss he brings a sence of pride to the pursuit of justice even though half the cops are crooked and out to hinder his efforts. Washington plays the role of the crime boss really well, he has a wicked streak but also a sence of honour and loyalty which i think made the character and the film so engrossing. Put together with the directing skills of Ridley Scott , his sweeping shots and colourful scenery are great in HD!!!, i would give this film 10 out of 10.
This film is a fantastic look at the drug enterprise of a man that lives in a high class world until everything crumbles. Denzel Washington plays the role so well that you actually like him and feel for him. We bought this movie after enjoying it through a rental and felt we would like to add it to our collection.
the best gangster film ive watched for a long time. takes a little while to get going but kept me glued to my seat after that. denzel plays an excellent part. well worth buying the steelbook version to find out more about the true storey.
Good film although I wouldn't put it with the likes of Goodfellas and the Godfather which it tries to be like. Denzel Wasington is an amazing actor and doesn't dissappoint with a strong performance. Overall good film but wouldn't watch it again.
Excellent film, even though its a long film it still has a great story which keeps you entertained. The extras are amazing, you really need a whole day off to watch every item on both discs.
Not the best gangster flick but certainly watchable, it is very slow though and is not continuous violence and action. Washington as usual plays his part very well and Russel Crowe is quite good as the hard man do gooding cop (bit of a contradiction) It tails off at the end (and seems to miss out on part of the plot which could have been quite good but would have made the film too long I guess) but it is based on a true story so I suppose it can't have the usual Hollywood ending which is no bad thing. Some of the dialect can be quite hard to follow at times but having said all this it is still a good film and one that I would recommend but rent it don't buy it. Its not scarface and to be honest isn't as good as Heat either but worth watching to see Washington play a baddy and play it well.
THIS FILM WAS REALLY GOOD I ENJOYED IT LOADS DENZEL WASHINGTON PLAYED A BRILLIANT ROLE I DEF RECOMMENED IT I WILL ADMIT SOME BITS COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER BUT OVERALL A BRILLIANT FILM
This was a very well directed story about the rise and fall of America's first black heroin dealer. Denzel Washington stars as Frank Lucas,a dealer who smuggles drugs through the bodies of soldiers who died in Vietnam. He became the biggest dealer on the east coast of America, successfully out selling the Mafia! Russell Crowe plays the hard nosed detective who fights continuosly to bring Lucas to justice. It is based upon a true story, the film was long yet gripping. Both Washington and Crowe play their roles convincingly. Yet another hit film by Martin Scorcese!
A splendid rolling journey through the rise and fall of America's first negro drug lord, and the story of the detective who brought him down. I thought the acting, scripting and cinematography were excellent. I was glued to the screen for the entire 2.5 hours of the film.
Excellent movie, highly recommended. If you are averse to violence then I would warn you off this film, as there is a fair sprinkling of graphic violence in it.
