Kevin Spacey plays the especially pathetic father of a family whose mid-life crisis will suddenly wake him. This crisis, however, is not the subject of the film. On the contrary, it’s the catalyst that will explode into their lives and allow the film to strip away several layers of American society. In fact, the film denounces the hypocrisy of a society obsessed with an outer appearance of success but is eaten away by frustration on the inside, thus destroying a certain American Dream. Here, Puritanism, patriotism, empowerment, and corporate America will not be spared.
This film was recommended to me by a friend and I recommend it to you, it really is a fantastic film.

Seller withdrew DVD as it was apparently faulty but failed to tell me so I waited for two weeks out of pocket. Was eventually refunded for film I never bought. (I firmly believe it was sold to someone else for more.)

American Beauty stole the main Oscars in the 1999 awards ceremony. And it's easier to see why. A top class film.
The only reason it is 4-Star and not 5 is becuase of the poor direction. Sam Mendes brought beautiful images by hiring COnrad L.Hall, one of the world's top cinematographers, and he seems to have an inability to move the camera. Some shots show the distance between characters perfectly but doesn't work all the time.
Worth buying if you aren't fussy about directional details.

Excellent film, most enjoyable.I purchased it because I watched the movie when it first came out and was keen to watch it again. I like the story line, simple everyday people getting on with there lives but showing you what is also happening behind the scenes of the characters.

American Beauty is undoubtedly the best movie that I've ever seen.
The story is brilliant, sometimes funny, sometimes moving, always so clever and about issues that affect all of us.
It surrounds a family that is falling apart. The marriage between the mother and father is failing due to a contrast in views on life, money etc.
The daughter is ashamed of her parents due to their constant bickering over petty things and their over-protectiveness. Distracted by both the prospect of losing his job and then the beautiful best friend of his daughter, Lester (Kevin Spacey)approaches life in a very different way.
Funny, touching, moving and sheer class. One of the best movies ever made.

American Beauty is one of the most fantastic films to date. It has an exciting yet weird narrative and is filmed and cut brilliantly. It tells the story of a family that is falling apart although the mother tries to keep this under tucks. I love how the film is structured, and how Lester's warped fantasies tie in with the even more warped reality of the film. An amazing cult film and I guarantee you won't be left disappointed after watching it.

i got this dvd because it had been in alot of those '100 greatest movies' kinda things. after watching it i was amazed ! its not predictable at all! plus i LOVE the soundtrack, thomas newman did a great job wit the music for the whole film. i love this movei so much, i can watch it over and over agin!

Not the normal American sucess story.... it actually addresses "normal" life,disfunctional family, if you could call it that. Beautiful acting by all, especially Kevin Spacey, with some really comical moments, wouldn t recommend to younger viewers though, however all in all this movie gets a thumbs up and 5* from me.

bought this cos i remember watching it at college a couple of years ago. its a great example of an american film thats actually good for once. great performances from everyone, especially annette bening, kevin spacey and thora burch. a great cast of recognisable faces, FANTASTIC directing by sam mendes.

THIS IS A FILM THAT GRABS YOU FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE WATCHING IT FOR HALF AN HOUR BEFORE GETTING IT, THE PLOT AND SUBTEXT OF THE FILM ARE PLAYED OUT THROUGH FANTASTIC PERFORMANCES BY ANNETTE BENING AND KEVIN SPACEY, THE BLACK HUMOUR IS TOTALLY IN KEEPING WITH THE STORYLINE AND THE BEST THING ABOUT HAVING IT ON DVD IS THAT IT IS A KEEPER, IT IS A FILM YOU CAN RETURN TO AND REWATCH ANYTIME.

This film was superb from start to end. A great story, and great acting.
Thats why this film has won so many awards.
The things that happen are so true to life and yet so funny.
I've seen this film about five films, and parts of it get to my heart everytime.

This was in perfect condition, i bought this as my partner kept telling me i'd love it, it was a really good film in excellent condition at a great price. AND it has thora birch people!

I bought the film only because I learned that the film had a score partly written by Thomas Newman (see/hear also 'Road To Perdition', 'The Green Mile' and numerous others) and I have found his music to be an excellent enhancement to every film he has been associated with.
In fact, his music for 'American Beauty' did not add so much as I expected but the film was an splendid representation of middle age crisis and apparent recovery with of course a gigantic twist.
Not a 'great' film, but a VERY good one. You might enjoy it and I hope you like the music!

Its a brilliant film theres nothing I disike about it. Its about the breakdown of relationships, finding yourself again, being young feeling emotions that you have not felt for years & realising what really matters in life ( not anything material ) Waking up from your artificial life.

I saw this amazing film at the cinema and loved it so much I bought it on dvd. American Beauty is one of my favourite films. It is shocking and very moving and also makes you smile. Each time I watch this film I am taken away for one hour and 57 minutes by the fantastic characters in this movie. The film is a visual feast. It has a kind of floaty magical feel about it. Taking you on a road to discovery that keeps you hooked from start to end.
The bonus features are pretty good too. Behind the scenes featurette. Audio Commentary and Storybook Presentation and 2 theatrical trailers. 5.1 surround sound was amazing and so was the Widescreen. Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is perfect as the 40 something hubby in a dead end job and in an unhappy numb marriage. He is fed up with life and does not even get along with his 16 year old daughter. Carolyn (Annette Bening) is his wife who also is bored and needs something more. Lester gives up his job and starts doing things that he actually enjoys. Smoking dope and buying a fast car and he wants as least amount of responsibility as possible.
The film takes you on a journey into this families life and what is really important. A perfect home and family and marriage does not mean happiness as we find out in American Beauty. Lester falls for his daughters best friend Angela (Mena Suvari) and this leads him down a path to which there is no return. I really enjoy this movie as the camera shots are amazing and the soundtrack is wonderful. One of my favourite songs is in the film,"American Dream" by Jakatta. No wonder this film won 5 Oscars and 6 Baftas. It takes you to another place and leaves you inspired and moved. As people say we do not get the time to stop and stare and see the important things in life.
