  U2 - The important albums
Review created: 14/06/08
by:

'Achtung baby' is a good CD however it is not U2's best album. Personally i think their best album is 'The Joshua Tree' followed by 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'. If you are a collector of 'U2', i would also advise getting 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' because it has their newish good songs in it too. Achtung Baby has a lot of the older stuff from 'U2'. If you like their older music get 'The Joshua Tree', but if you like their newer music then defiantly get 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'. Achtung baby is really an album for all you collectors of 'U2', like me.

Achtung baby was made in 1991 and is a good album, but not the best from 'U2'.
The most popular songs on the album are:

One
Even Better Than the Real Thing
Zoo Station

So if you wanted to see what music you may like on 'Achtung Baby', i would advise listening to these 3 songs.

Thank You For reading.

  First Class

I made a ridiculously low bid for a CD and was delighted to win it! After making the Payapl payment I was advised almost immediately by email that it had been sent by first class post the same day. Sure enough the next day, it turned up well packaged, immaculate throughout including the cover and book and played perfectly. Rarely these days do you get so much for so little. I have listed this ebayer as one of my favourites as this was a first class, hassle free, and friendly service!

Keep up the good work.
G

Came out in 1991 and still sounds great
Review created: 25/03/08

i think this album well deserved of its place in history.
with some hardcore electronic, industrial European rock and mixed it beautifully with their trade mark emotional rawness and energy.

  Chopping down The Joshua Tree.
Review created: 03/03/08

Reinventions rarely come as thorough and effective as this album that completely changed U2's sound and style, thus carrying them as far away from the stadium anthems of "The Joshua Tree" and "Rattle and Hum" as possible. The crashing, unrecognizable distorted guitars that open "Zoo Station" are a clear signal that U2 have traded their Americana pretensions for postmodern, contemporary European music. Drawing equally from Bowie's electronic, avant-garde explorations of the late '70s and the neo-psychedelic sounds of the thriving rave and Madchester club scenes of early-'90s England, "Achtung Baby" sounds vibrant and endlessly inventive.

Unlike their inspirations, U2 rarely experiment with song structures over the course of the album. Instead, they use the thick dance beats, swirling guitars, layers of effects, and found sounds to break traditional songs out of their constraints, revealing the tortured emotional core of their songs with the hyper-loaded arrangements. In such a dense musical setting, it isn't surprising that U2 have abandoned the political for the personal on "Achtung Baby" since the music, even with its inviting rhythms, is more introspective than anthemic. Bono has never been as vulnerable as is he is on this album, creating a feverish nightmare of broken hearts and desperate loneliness.

Unlike other U2 albums, "Achtung Baby" is filled with sexual imagery, much of it quite disturbing, and it ends on a disquieting note. Few bands as far into their career as U2 have recorded an album as adventurous or fulfilled their ambitions quite as successfully as they do here, and the result is arguably their best album. Personal stand-out tracks: "The Fly", "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" and "One".

  U2's best album
Review created: 07/10/07

This album must be one of the best rock albums ever made. It has all you can ask for.
I was a dedicated U2-fan after they released their album 'War' in 1983 and was an even greater fan after 'The Joshua tree' from 1987. Then they wanted to conquer America with 'Rattle and Hum' and I lost some of my interest. I thought that they had lost themselves in an attempt to be 'larger than life'. Then the Berlin wall came down and U2 returned to Europe with a bang and released their best album. My favourite tracks are 'Even better than the real thing', 'So cruel' and the three tracks ending the record: 'Ultra violet', 'Acrobat' and 'Love is blindness'. 'Acrobat' is a surprisingly overlooked song; I have never heard it live myself or on any DVD live performance.

Like David Bowie in 1977, U2 returned to Europe after being preoccupied in America, and renewed themself. 'Zoostation', I guess, is a bit inspired by the story about Christiane F. 'Wir kinder vom Banhof Zoo' (film soundtrack made of David Bowies music from the 70s). Track #3 'One' is probably about human relationships, but the reunification of Germany is also maybe an influence. At the cover of the album the band is posing on German soil probably near the Berlin wall. And besides that there are images from arabic countries as well. The cold war ended and hostilities between east and west disappeard (for a while), we became One. Maybe Bono is dreaming of a similar happening between christians and muslims? Anyway the rest of the tracks are less political, mostly about relationships between man and woman and humans in general.
The real strength of this album is the fact that almost every track is a real goodie, it's made of massive quality right through. Bono sings with lots of passion and dedication, like when he was a young rebellion, but with some maturness added. The production of the record is glittering and brilliant made by sound craftsmen and artists like Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, Steve Lillywhite and Flood, and they all do an incredible job. I think 'Zoo station' and 'The Fly' is maybe a bit too dense regarding sound, but otherwise it's creme de la creme.
My rating for this record is not only Excellent but even Fantastic and Brilliant. Describing the music in poetic terms is superflous. You just have to listen for yourself, and if you are interrested in rock music you will not be disappointed.

  U2 Achtung Baby CD 1991
Review created: 07/07/07

In my opinion this album is, by far, the best U2 offering! I usually 'flick through' even my favourite albums but this one you can just leave on! A good mix of uplifting tracks (Even better than the Real Thing/ Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses/ Mysterious Ways) to some slower 'thought provoking' gems (Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World/ So Cruel/ Acrobat and my favourite LOVE is BLINDNESS!)
My music taste is hugely varied so I am not a U2 Stalwart but this album is a cracker!
If you like this, 'The Joshua Tree' and 'Rattle and Hum' are well worth a gander!
For me, 'POP' and 'ZOOROPA' don't quite have the 'edge' (excuse the pun!) of Achtung Baby/ Rattle & Hum/ Joshua Tree but I won't be using them as coasters!

Achtung Baby - Ice Cool !
Review created: 01/12/06

This is a Classic U2 Album that opens with the fantastic Zoo Station and continues in a style that is pure genius. U2 paint songs with a broad brush and make music that is both diverse and intriguing. U2 don't churn out the same old same old like you get with most rock bands it's no wonder they are one of the biggest bands in the world.

On New Years Eve in 1989 Bono closed the Love town Tour Concert by saying "This is the end of something for U2. It's no big deal, it's just that we have to go away and dream it all up again,"

Achtung Baby is the Dream !

Turn up to 11 and enjoy!

  An achtung for Achtung Baby
Review created: 09/07/06
by:

Achtung Baby was a corner turner for U2, arguably the greatest rock band ever. For those U2 neophytes (I was one at the time) the sound of Achtung Baby was a reinvention, for hardcore U2 fans, it was a rediscovery. This was the album which converted me into a die-hard U2 fan.

With hard-edged songs such as Mysterious Ways, The Fly, and Even Better Than the Real Thing, and the softer sounds of One, So Cruel, and Love is Blindness, and less-heralded singles such as Ultra-Violet, Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around the World, and Until the End of the World, this album, arguably, is one hit single after another. For people familiar with U2's pattern of reinvention, Achtung Baby was the first installment of their next trifecta of albums, and signalled an 'era' of hard sounds: hard guitar, hard bass, and hard vocals. This album is a terrific starting point for people interested in U2 at their mid-career point, and who are looking for a different sounding band from their previous releases. There is a sense of continuity throughout the entire album, with the next song complementing the one before, yet any one song on the album could have been released as a stand-alone single.

I thoroughly, completely, and wholeheartedly recommend this album to all people, and can aver, that should I be stuck on a desert island with any five albums (although all five would be U2 albums, lol) I would definately take this one with my top choice. This album is a 6 out of 5.

This is an item worth buying, U2 over the years have produced many great singles and albums and among fan's this is held as one of the best, and i tend to agree! With such classic tracks as 'even better than the real thing' 'one' and 'the sweetest thing' you just can't help but enjoy the album...a great investment.
