Good idea for a film but avergae overall

Good effects etc and potentially an interesting story line, but the film itself is turns out to be fairly lame particulary towards the end when it really seems to run out of ideas and drags on.

A.I. When will this film end...
Review created: 30/03/08
by:

I have to say I agree with the many reviewers who say this film is slow or too long. If you like that sort of film which drags out then fine but if your looking for something to grab your attention and keep you interested then avoid this one.

The storyline and acting isn't too bad although there are some adult themes in places which I wonder why they were needed for a family movie but the worst part is the VERY slow development through the film and what appears like an ending but actually there is half an hour to go.

Rarely do I rate a film so low but this one is worthy of 2/5 or 3/5 if being very generous !

love the mix of directing styles
kubric at the beggining half which starts as a gritty sci fi film really pushing the boundries
then speilburg takes over and it turns into a fairytale like story
very good film and very meaningful

Interesting film concept and a good plot, but too long and could have finished half an hour earlyier and completely lost the last (deppressing) part of the film.

A.I. - On My 'All Time Favourites' List!
Review created: 30/01/08

"David is 11 years old. He weighs 60 pounds. He is 4 feet, 6 inches tall. He has brown hair. His love is real. But he is not."

Old Steven Spielburg didn't get the credit he deserved for this film. It has to be a classic. The little boy 'robot', David, played by Haley Joel Osment was superbly portrayed and very heartfelt. The bit at the end where his mother comes back to life brings tears to my eyes everytime.

I think this movie has not been appreciated in it's time and will probably be recognized for the masterpiece it is, in about 7 to 10 years from now. Many people don't seem to 'get it'. Like The Matrix it has a message, not on so many levels, but a message none the less.

The part where we join the lives of all the condemmed robots really makes you think. The 'culling' for sport goes on in today's society. Look at fox hunting, bull fighting, cock and dog fighting - it all happens! Granted they are robots in this film, but if a robot has feelings do they not have a conciousness? Maybe one day these things will happen!

Jude Law plays an excellent 'Gigolo' robot - I've known men like this! The make -up for his character and other robots was very good and the part where David's face 'melts' after eating food was quite creepy. I wasn't sure if that was a special effect or actual make-up but it wil never leave my mind. His face reminded me of an old friend I once knew that had had a stroke.

I absolutely loved this film and with the message being 'love', I really think it makes a change from all the violent, cops and robbers, rubbish that has been around and still keeps coming round!

With a running time of 145 minutes and in widescreen you also get over 100 minutes of behind-the-scene footage, new interviews, and featurettes.

There are interviews with Steven Spielberg, Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law. Spielberg talks about developing the vision of A.I.

There is also a section on Lucasfilm's Industrial Light and Magic group on the film's special effects. Stan Winston explains how the robots were brought to life with an in-depth look at the development and creation of the robots of A.I. A fascinating documentary on bringing the vision of A.I. to the screen.

A behind-the-scenes visit to Stan Winston Studios with early footage of tests for "Teddy" and other robots. (I wish I had one of those teddies!)

There is a featurette on the sound effects and orchestral score for the film. There is also Storyboard sequences, effects portfolio, portrait gallery, behind-the-scenes photos with Steven Spielberg and production design photos, theatrical trailers and production drawings.

I suppose this is the modern day version of Pinocchio, except a lot more futeristic and dramatic. I loved it. I'll watch it again any time!

  A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Review created: 08/12/07(updated 08/12/07)
by:

Originally developed by Stanley Kubrick. Rewritten and directed by Steven Spielberg. The story about... love.
What is love? What are we ready to do for love? What if one who feels love is child? What if this child is robot? How real is his love? If piece went through hands of such legends it must be masterpiece. And it is. However my first feeling was: I hate humankind. Mother, who adopted robot-child - first one able to feel love, fails as a mother and leaves him in the middle of forest. Through long and dramatic journey he meets her again and do anything to win her love. His ultimate dream is to become a real boy so mother will not discriminate him anymore. It is very moving and heart-piercing story. There is strong link with the story of Pinocchio. Personally I didn't like aliens theme in the end, but I felt that Kubrick didn't have a faith in goodness of humankind and made another creature to finalise the movie.
Thank you for reading

Well, where do i start?, this is a really great film! it is so interesting to see how a robot can feel those sort of emotions, it is also great to see how most of the population in that world are mostly robots not humans, but was good to see that the robots and humans were living together in the same world.

so i would reccomend this film to anyone!

I think that steven Speilberg has done himself proud again, with this fantastic futuristic creation of his. I was blown away the first time i saw this with the mixture of comedy action and sadness. By the end of the film you feel that it has really got through to you. However the ending is a bit farfetched.... i won't say any more!

I have seen this film before on TV but only caught 3/4 of it. I found it for sale on e-bay and thought it would be a good dvd for my collection. I have over 300 films and if I think a film is good I always buy an original. This was the case with this dvd. It was brand new double disc.
The film is a modern day pinochio with a little robot boy being bought by a family to replace their little boy who has been in a coma for a long time with no long term recovery expected. The mother and father contact a company that deal with robot children and aquire a little boy. He learns to be their son very quickly and dotes on his mummy. Then their own son makes a recovery and comes home and the robot cannot cope with sharing his mummy. The original son gets the new toy into trouble and mummy ends up dumping him. This is where his quest to find the blue fairy begins, to make him into a real boy and then his mummy will love him.
On his journey he goes to a festival where all the scrap robots are dumped and a show is put on to the public who revel in the spectacle of robots being mutilated but the little boy robot is so real that the crowd are revolted by the thought of a child being mutilated. He latches on to a robot called Joe who is a loverbot! Together they search for the blue fairy and along the way the little boy realises where he really comes from but eventually finds out that the blue fairy really does make dreams come true.

the film started if nicely ... but then they were some adult contents started showing up eg. jude law as a male prostitute who goes around sleeping with women. i think this content was not needed in the film as it was a children film. steven spilberg could have made jude law into any character but i wonder why a 'male prostitute'. i had to switch the film off and tell the kids that the dvd wasnt working. it was a nice film overall but not for kids.

A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is the story of David (Haley Joel Osment), the first mecha (a futuristic term for a mechanized human being) designed with the ability to love. A couple whose son is in a coma "adopts" David to help them recover from their loss. Naturally, things do not go as planned, and David is forced to leave the mother (Frances O'Connor) he's been "imprinted" to love, and make his way in the world. Traveling with Teddy, a hi-tech stuffed bear, David escapes the Flesh Fair, where angry humans destroy mechas to "purge artificiality," and unexpectedly befriends Gigolo Joe (Jude Law in a wry performance), a robot designed to pleasure women. Joe agrees to help David in his quest to become human.
Director Stanley Kubrick originally developed A.I., at one point asking Spielberg to direct it. When Kubrick passed away, Spielberg took the reins. Using a treatment and thousands of drawings commissioned by Kubrick, Spielberg wrote his own screenplay (his first since 1979's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND). Osment, perhaps the only pre-teen actor who can effectively convey existential angst, gives a marvelous performance, helping Spielberg create a gorgeous futuristic fairy tale that questions the very nature of what we call life
