One of the all time greats, a brilliant documentary style feature. Next time you're moaning about being stuck in traffic just remember it could always be worse, you could always be one of the poor buggers trying to cross that River.
This War Film has to be one of my favourites. It is based on the Allied bold gamble Operation Market Garden which culmintes with a significant allied parachute force into Holland (Sept 1944)whose objectives was to capture a series of bridges intact which would allow the Allies to strike into the heart of Germany and shorten the war. The story ultimately results in failure for the Allies through a combination of battlefield politics, poor intelligence bad luck and worse weather.
The cast in this epic includes Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Edward Fox,Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier,Ryan O'Neal and Robert Redford.
The film is directed by Richard Attenborough. My personal recommendation is the 2 disc special edition which includes Special Features, documentary, widescreen version which is 2 Hours 49 Mins filmed in Colour. The DVD is available in English and French Soundtrack and in addition to these 2 there are a further 10 other subtitled languages
For me this is a 5/5 any day of the week. As far as movies go this is historically accurate and it is in my eyes, an absolute epic. An all star cast give top notch performances and the battle sequences are amazing. None of the over the top hollywood hero B**lsh*t we see in movies today. Basically an accurate account of real life events which stands repeated veiwing and a film I strongly recommend you buy.
Quite a superb film, and historically correct, an all star cast including Anthony Hopkins (stiff upper lip chaps !!), Michael Caine (another stiff upper lip) Ryan O Neal, Robert (The Brave) Redford, Edward Fox (What war film WOULDN'T be complete without him !!) Gene Hackman (grumpy Polish Commander) Dirk Bogarde etc etc....if you've never seen this film and you like war films..why haven't you bought it ?
