i was bought the novel of the same name for christmas & really enjoyed it. when i saw it had been made into a film & actually had 2 of my favorite actors in it ie: anthony hopkins & anne bancroft i decided to look out for a copy of of the film on dvd. i was lucky to find a used copy in good condition & purchased it. the film - while not quite as good as the book (the film misses some of the content of the book) was never the less most watchable & enjoyable and ive since lent it to a couple of friends to watch also.
I have seen this film on the television a few years ago and thought it was a magnificent story. Anne Bancroft playing opposite Anthony Hopkins although they never meet in the film, two magnificent actors, is most enjoyable. The love story with a difference. The thoughts of both is the main narative in the film and you feel as if you are there with them as part of the story as you eaves drop on their thoughts. Not many films can move you as this one can. One of the most enjoyable films of all time.
I had seen the film on TV and read the book but wanted to own it Its a gentle film with very good characterization, I like to see the diferences in the way London was then and today also how Americans looked at us then.
Seeing what we take for granted now was still a luxery so long after the war i.e.tinned meat!!! Fruit!!!
It is about an American writer who wants good copies of English Classics and her correspondence with a book shop in Charring Cross Road. It covers her life and those of those of the shop assistants.
Its funny in places and sad too.......film to be watched with a bottle of wine and someone to cuddle up to!
I was talking to a friend at work about how much I loved books and the old smells and nooks of second hand book shops, so on his lunch break he bought me a copy of one of his favorite books 84 Charing cross road written by Helene Hannff. This is where the love affair started (With the book not the person !!) Once you have read it you will be hooked for life,That is why I bought the dvd, I had pictures in my head of what the characters looked like and I wanted them to come to life, the film cast every single one of them perfectly. The actors are amazing and the book is followed perectly with no extra scenes added in for effect etc. It is the true life story of Helene Hannff she is living in the USA and doesn't have too much money to spend on books, she loves English writers so she writes to a little book shop called Marks and Co which is on 84 Charing cross road in London, England. The book is the letters between Helene and Frank the shops manager. It is so funny sometimes and so moving at others, I won't write too much more because it will spoil the story but for anyone who loves books, true life and the love between friends, don't be put off by the "she was in love with a man she could never meet" title on the box it is not a trashy love story with people having affairs and blind dates. This is a true Gem, buy it now.
